The problem with braid is that it cuts into woody snags and breaks off very easily on rocky bottoms. This can be avoided by using a good length (4m+) of heavy mono/flouro leader when fishing waters with alot of snags.

If you use 4m of 60lb+ Fluoro Leader, wouldnt it be difficult to cast?

I you have small eyes on your rod it will be a problem (I used a Shimano beast master tiger special and was ok)
What helps is the knot you use to join, I find the Albright knot works well as it has quite a low profile, do all the twisting with the lower diameter line.

Nile Perch are known to have extremely sharp gill plates, thus the reason for using the 60lb. Even though I am still on the light side, compared to other guys (and guides) using 100lb+

So what Ive gathered from the posts is the following:

1. If you have a big enough reel with high enough line capacity, and you are fishing areas with alot of Snags, mono seems to be a better option than braid.

2. Yes, braid has lower stretch and therefor you can turn the fish before it heads into cover.

3. with mono you will not have to use a 2m+ leader, that will not only make casting a hell of alot easier, but will not be as rough on your guides as the knot passes thru every time.

4. most importantly! mono seems to be more abrasion resistant than braid, so if you do get caught in a snag, chances of you actualy retrieving the fish will be increased dramatically.

Noted, but if you are casting a very heavy dead / live bait, how much more weight do you need to add at the end of your line?

yes quite correct

bassically it dosnt matter when casting big baits it doesent really matter as that tiny little bit of wait added to the total wait of the line bieng casted wont effect your casting distance

but when casting bait like platanas (free swimming) this little bit of wait really does count

Hardware Issue Update

Hello Photobucket Users,

We’ve worked through the weekend with our infrastructure vendors on the issue that’s still affecting some of our users. Despite the many layers of redundancy that Photobucket utilizes in our data centers, we experienced a rare multiple hardware failure.

The probability of such an event is extremely rare (1 in 1 billion). Since it is so rare, we have had a difficult time estimating a resolution. We should have a resolution or at least a better timeline for resolving the issue by tomorrow (4/19/11) or Wednesday (4/20/11). At that time, we will post here, as well as our Facebook page and on Twitter.

We do understand your frustrations and there is a large team of Photobucket employees, consultants and vendors working hard day and night to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

Hi Guys

Please help me out - I cant see the images in the initial post. I'm going fishing this weekend and i want to try those techniques to hook into a lunker barbel.

A friend of mine has a place on the Vaaldam near Frankfort, he showed me some pics of 4 barble he's caught there on his last 3 trips and claimed they were all over 30kg.

I questioned his scale and he immediately produced weigh slips from the butcher in Frankfort. He sacked them in wet carp sacks, took them to town on an unhooking mat and had them weighed along with a printout from the scale.

The fish are not long enough to be 30kg if they were a Bloemhof or river Cat but are so fat and well fed they easily reach the weight of 28, 30.5 and 31.2kg.

I'm going to see if we can get out to fish this section. It is a long flat dam section with a sudden drop to 14m and this is where they get the big Cats

Going to use Trophy's static Wells rig there. Going to rig a 1kg+ Grass Carp on that rig at around 6-8m deep water
