Surf Angling Lures

Hi guys...

I got my 10ft 3oz Loomis and Exceler 4000 sorted... now...

If I want to go to my tackle shop to do some lure shopping to make up a nice, all round lure box, what should I look for?

I'm going to target Kob, Shad, Leerie etc. I'll be fishing off the South Coast (Stillbay to Plett)

Iron candy spoons from Basilmanning, do a search on the forum and see how the guys rate them

But flavour of the month i would have to say Sea Iron lure/spoons

Very versatile, check out this thread by Spyker Kruger and see how he rates them as a good all rounder

hi.

you basically need some lead heads with bucktail and ome for plastics. plugs and some spoons. but i must say a 10 ft might be a bit heavy on the wrists.

Some of these in 1,5 and 2 oz sizes. I know the olive colour bucktail is popular in the Eastern Cape

Thought so too Spin... any suggestions in the R500 class?

Go loomis 8ft spinning, much lighter.

but remember what you want to target, u should also consider pulling power( back bone) as well as casting range for shore spinning.

I use a 12ft loomis spinning longbutt with a regal Xi 3500 or dawia procaster 3000x

can cast amongst the bamboo bush and catch a shad, off the bricks or shore and still spin in the bay for kingfish.

well you tackle might not be , up to casting
lipped lures , like
havocs for cob in the surf , but all the lures and jigs above works too !

hi.
a 9ft rod is youre best option with the reel you want to use. 20lbs braid is great but you can also use 30lbs if you like. the 20lbs does give a xtra 10m on a cast sometimes but the 30lbs can be better for knot strength and abbrasion. as for casting lours like havoks for cob you can get the same distance with a 9ft rod. i can cast my 2oz lead head as far as with my 13.6ft and .40 line.

ive seen a 3oz shimano vengance rod sold by some store in PE. who do you deal with in george as i can arrange to get one to you threw one of the stores. they sell here for about R400.

agent 007 is right that you will battle to throw havocs but you wont need to as you will probably out fish the guys throwing lipped lured with leadheads on the right conditions but im sure you have a 12 or 13ft if you have to throw them.

i always take my 9ft and 13ft to the surf just incase conditions arnt what yo expect.

Get the following

Lipped lures, 2 or 3 in the 12cm range and add weighted triangles

2-2.5oz Two tone spoons (silver/brass) in V and s-bend

A plug or two in the 2oz range - white will always be good

Spoil yourself with one of these new overpriced spoons, be it painted or stainless steel

A popper or 2 will also work for leeries

A few paddle tail soft plastics, 5 inch in natural colours, with some 1.5 to 2oz jigheads, good for all predators, good action in the tail

And there goes a grand . . .

The Shimano Vengeance is a nice rod, but i would not push past 1oz with it, although its rated for 2oz

There are two models in the Shimano Vengeance, a 2oz and 3oz. I have the 3oz and its casts 2oz and 2,5oz lures perfectly

Moose,

How's the backbone on the Vengeance 3oz? The guy at the tackle shop says its a bit too "slap" or flex in his opinion.  The difference is, you actually fished with the rod so you can give me a better opinion...  I searched the forum on the Exceler 4000 and there seems to be mixed opinions because of the "Anti Reverse Bearing" or something to that effect... Penn Sargus also looks like good contender... Would the Sargus 4000 or 5000 compare with a Exceler 4000?

Raymond, It has a little bit of a "slap" tip section, but that is what you need though to maximize the action on the lures.

I'm dont really know the Penn reels, Roland could shed more light, but I think the 5000 would be closer in size to the Exceler 4000.

A lot of guys tell me that the Daiwa Regal is a better buy than the Exceler. And its half the price.

Ok, sorry, have only fished with the vengeance 2oz once, i actually broke it by casting a 1oz lure, but hey, thats just one rod..... but my overall opinion is that its a nice rod. but like i say, i like pushing a rod hard, so i wouldnt throw more than what i feel comfortable with
