SUP Stand Up Paddle Board Fishing

I’ve been looking for a kayak to fish from on our local farm dams for probably more than a year.. After much shopping around I eventually bought a Vanhunks Amberjack 12’6 hybrid SUP Kayak. It’s essentially a plastic flat bottom fishing kayak with a flat deck which allows you to stand on. Standing on it is super easy and you can fish in essentially any direction, thus you don’t have to hold a stance like on a normal SUP.

I have also fitted a chair thus paddling like a normal kayak when I want/need to. Other stuff I fitted were two rod holders, for when bait fishing or hopefully some day some estuary action. A fishing crate to carry my extras, see pics. My current anchor is a rod which tip section I lost and a Shimano 20/40 reel with a 700gr anchor, this holds me in strong winds.

A few small drawbacks include that it doesn’t paddle very fast compared to a normal kayak and since it doesn’t have a rudder it doesn’t track that well in strong wind conditions. Also, if you stand up the wind takes you like a kite, so if you want to fish in one place you have to anchor. In light wind however you can drift fish once you have the hang of it which is a really good stealth approach.
Rigged out it’s pretty heavy so you need a trolley to pull it, but it does have a load capacity of over 200kg so you can load whatever you like.

Mostly caught bass off it but will be targeting some other species including bluegill, carp, barbel and maybe some other fish....

My mate goes out with a SUP to spin off when the sea conditions are conducive..both times I have seen him out though he has been buzzed by the grey suited ones and bronze ones. The last time he had a nice tail on for a while till a bronzie stole it next to him, got a few katonkel..was a kayak and SUP out last time we were out getting buzzed, mate had to keep on smacking it on the noggin with paddle telling it to F-off.. I was stoked to be on the boat!

I will not take this SUP out more than 200m in the sea, will be good for crayfishing or shallow sheltered areas. If I were to fish for tail or katonkel I’d rather just get a proper stealth kayak, just way more efficient and safe.

I’ve been buzzed by whites off Vleesbaai when kayak fishing in my BFS you feel a bit vulnerable but nothing to freak out about, they tend to like going for rudders...

congrats DJP, looks awesome.
i think it should track very well looking at the hull design.

I’t does an ok job considering the way it’s built. It’s quite wide so you have to paddle wide and thus it pulls you a bit side to side when putting effort into the strokes.
Being flat at the bottom means if cruises over weeds/grass and shallows quite easily. Lekker when standing up site fishing!

I have some epic drone footage of him, johnies and all, that another mate took, will figure out how to upload it..is there any way to upload an mpg to the site or does one have to go the youtube route?

Lekker thread boet, your setup looks like lots of fun..the bass have no place to hide..Also as my mate says the gamefish have absolutely no fear of the sup, he can paddle right up to shoals..but also the grey suited ones have no fear either! I think everytime when conditions are still enough to go out waves and wind wide, and bait has been washed or corralled into the backline and gamefish and birds are busting up, then the grey suits generally will be about as well, my mate has gotten buzzed everytime it seems LOL. It's another mates SUP, they have kayaks too and spots on boats, both are watermen and surf, kite etc and know their stuff..It is not for novices in the sea, you can get into some real kaka haha.. I'd try somehow fit a trolling motor on myself! But then again a white would probably not be able to resist that..

Same here, surf/spearfish/dive/scuba etc. so my opinion of balance and fear of sharks might be biased.

After the winter I will do some estuary missions, I have some leeries to target...

Imo, upload the drone footage to youtube. You will likely be offered a couple of US $ by some "wildlife" documentary company, mates of mine in Mosselbay have made quite a few bucks like this.

That was the plan for April... but I suspect it will have to wait for next year since the cape estuaries don't do well in winter (as far as I know)... maybe a September / October mission to Duivenhoks/Witsand/Swartvlei is on the cards, or maybe closer to home in Bot/Klein River...here is for hoping...

I think I will probably be targeting carp in winter...

Nice!

If you will consider pimping it further, the paddle board fishing concept has been developed with upto 10 HP motors fitted!

I have been thinking about something similar for Langebaan!

@DJP, please keep us posted on handling issues like swell and other boat wakes. nice bass on the last pic.

@Lord Litho, we have a similar craft maunfactured here called the powerfisha from stealth https://stealthkayaks.com/powerfisha-14/

I’ve checked out the powafisha, they look really cool for certain applications, I suppose somewhere between a SUP, skiff and Jetski. If you have larger distances to travel or schools of baitfish to chase it would certainly be a great option!

Although I don’t mind engine driven crafts I have a preference for kayaks, SUPs, self propelled crafts. If you give me a hoarse, quad bike or scrambler to go outdoors I’d pick the hoarse...
