I guarantee you the chances of that guy getting 12 again is not good. Steenies are on the way back, but its still a fine balance between succesfully recpouping a species and destroying it. Why take a chance? The law is the law an to publicly "vee jou gat daaraan af" is not clever. Especially if we are trying our best to preserve what is left... Capiche?

Chuck, 2 things

Yes they shoal...

Then lots of fish in one spot doesnt mean the species is doing well. For example there are lots of red steenbras in the transkei, but that doesnt mean the species is doing well... there are supposed to be red steenbras all over the coast. The species as a whole is in dire straits.

Same with White Steenies, they supposed to be all over the inshore area feeding on the worm and prawn that is supposed to be there in the first place. They used to be in massive shoals at places like Kleinbrak, and Santos beach in Mosselbay, but now there are almost none.

People go to Strandfontein Pool and see 20 galjoen come out in a day and think there must be lots... but they are supposed to be that plentiful everywhere you see some whitewater.

Galjoen used to be so plentiful they were viewed as pests 50 years ago that came and stole your worm, mussel or prawn bait intended for steenbras and kob.

It is 1000 times worse if it's a fish that only occurs in SA waters.

Then we get to the great white shark.... their numbers are up substantially in sa waters, but the species as a whole is still in deep brown stuff if you look at the rest of the world.

Lots of a species in one area doesnt mean the species is doing well as a whole.

I agree with you guys fully. This guy should never have targeted more than one steenie, and then kept one undersize as well... and so distastefull of Stywe Lyne to publish it!! Yuk (t(do(wn)(t(do(wn)

I'm not going to buy that mag anymore even though I grew up reading it!

Ok so maybe the fish were caught some time ago when you were allowed to keep more than one steenbras and smaller fish, BUT Stywe Lyne Publishing such a photo should have known better.

Seems like he used to be a news reader for Algoa FM.

If I remember correctly, this isn't the first time Stywe Lyne have published illegal catches - correct me if I'm wrong please.

different species of kob frequent the inshore environment of each area. They are very difficult to tell apart so the solution was to change the bag limit for 'kob' (which comprises Dusky and Silver)

Hiya Guys,

There are always three sides to a story...my side, your side and the truth?

I could have a look through quite a few facebook profiles and make an opinion...sometimes we should give others the benefit of doubt?

This is what Deon had to say...

Hi Brett, thanks!

Yes, I thought that would be the case, but it does'nt upset me, because the bigger of those steenies was released shortly after the pic was taken. The small one was one of those unfortunate instances where it swallowed the hook, and could not be rescued. I don't believe in releasing fish with a hook way back in the throat.

I don't even eat fish, and only take home those that could not be released - just to give it to some of my friends. I have a firm policy of catch and release, and I always put them back into the water - no matter how big or small.

Therefor people can think whatever they want - as long as I know what the true story is.

It's not even worth replying to those people who obviously don't bother to get the story behind the story first before commenting!

You are most welcome to post this on my behalf.

Thanks for your note, really appreciate!

See you soon, would love to come to the shop and have a chat.

Kindest regards
Deon

Nice om sy kant te stel, punt is dis onverantwoordelik om daai foto met 2 steenies te publiseer in Stywe Lyne.
Maar ja, ek stem saam, elke storie het twee kante, maak nie saak hoe dit verdraai word nie.

Regardless of what he says, it's still irresponsible of the magazine to post pics that could lead people to think what they did.

Did he state in the article that the bigger of the two was released?

Nou is hulle besig met vure dood slaan.

They should have mentioned the release in the article.

Too late 4 damage control on behalf of the magazine.

Ettiene and his editorial staff should be more resposible on what and how they portray articles in the mag.

We all have a responsiblity i.t.o the law. The mags and sealine being public forums have a bigger job to advocate (not police) the law in respect of 1 sized steenie per day per person. (Your right to keep and not release it)

why target more if you already caught one? why boast of a pic with such small fish even? if the second fish was caught after the big one, did the big one survive the release? or was the release in the deepfreezer. was the second one the small one handed to mcm/daff as regulations demand you to do?

nice explanation, but then he throat hooks fish quite often. quickly scanned his facebook pics yesterday.

I like the man's attitude with the reply, but whatever the case, Stywe Lyne should not have published that particular pic.
