steel to leader

i used to use a number 1 power swivel beacuse i never trusted the knotting the steel to the leader. But at the beginning of last season i had lank burnoffs, i changed to tying the steel and strait away the problem went away.

I am just starting to use steel trace below my windon leader when sliding. Last week I saw my mates slide trace get inhaled and bitten off (Dont worry we went back 2 days later and got the tiger that may have caused the problems, will put up a report soon). But since then I feel like 60-80cm is not enough of a bite trace for large sharks.

Before I found this I started asking on an Australian forum, but rather go straight to the experts, will a knot between the leader and steel cause the slide to get stuck very often?

Cheers

hi cuthbad, many guys use the steel section and they seem to not have a problem judging by the fish they get, crackerjack ect. but i must add they seem to only use it when fishing raggies. why not make your hook trace longer?

cheers Kopstamp,

That is what has been suggested on an australian forum as well. However one of my top spots has a deep gutter (gully?) Followed by some shallow reef that the slide and bait has to get over so I find if I make the trace longer the slide gets stuck on the shallow reef.

When fighting the fish we move down the beach to the left of the reef so we dont have to bring the shark back over the top but to get the bait to the deep water we need to cast and slide right over the top. This is why I prefer to keep my trace short but want a way to stop it getting bitten off.

This is what I have come up with so far. However I need to try the knot suggested by Trophy, may be smaller.

Use a 3turn figure 8 on the leader and 2 turn on the steel. I use 150lb with 1-1.2mm leaders and 200lb steel for any thicker leader. 95% of people I know use steel there for when they slide for anything as it also helps to stop you getting cut off on rocks and obviously bitten off. I have never had it get stuck on the knot.
Most of the people I know use between 30cm and just under 1m I like to use atleast 1m to as long as your drop is...

cuthbad i think steve asnwered your question inadvertatly, if you use the steel you should look to use smaller diameter nylon? like 1mm.

Did a back to back fig 8 with 1.6mm and 1.5mm ss and knot was not all to big. but had the brute force of ants pulling on the other end.

What slides are you using? the centro wire from shimano is thinner than the Kingfisher fishmate, so you can steal a couple of mm there aswell?

I hear you on the reef, the sandbanks acts the same way. It not possible to get lots of hight before sliding? did this the other day and seemed to get me over the bank easier?

I still use atleast a 1mm-1.2mm on the beach sometimes up to 1.5mm and atleast 1.3mm but normally 1.5mm off of rocks the knots are not big like you say and I have never had any problems and I still dont think it is a major weak spot as many say it might be slightly weaker but it is still more than strong enough and use steel above my stopper 99.9% of the time...

Have any of you had the following happen:

When you make the knot, it obviously "stands out" from the rest of the leader. When this section of the leader (the knot) therefore rubs over sandbanks or, more specifically, rocks, it takes a lot more punishment than the rest of the leader. The result is therefore that it is abraded more quickly than the remainder of the leader and the likely source of eventual tackle failure.

kopstamp I'm using slides from rockhustler and some heavy duty richter slides, had a quick go last night and they seem to go over the knot easy enough.

Will have to try the 2 turn figure 8 on the steel. Marius that is a good point about abrasion to the knot. Will keep an eye out for that!

ok cool! just make that knot small as possible.
best is trial and error unfortunatly.

Khan slides should go over easily. suppose you will just have to slide longer to make 100% sure!

Show us that tiger!!

very rarely get the right wind for kites (or helium balloon as is more common here) but we have just started using a kayak to get baits out.

I would still rather get a fish on slide than paddle, just seems a bit like cheeting when you dont have to cast it.

Anyway this is starting to look like a hijack, I'll get that report up tomorrow hopefully
