Stainless steel vs Other hooks

Hi

I was reading fish magazine where a writer of an article promotes the use of stainless steel hooks - barbless of course over your other hooks. the reason for this as he states that should you you loose the fish - the stainless steel hook will not cause an infection and will most probably fall out after a week or two due to it being barbless ????

what do you guys think ??

The permit conditions for commercial longlining prohibit the use of stainless hooks.

The irony is that Mustad carbon hooks are coated with "Duratin" which makes them 9 times more rust resistant than stainless.

I have caught some fish aspesialy for some or other reason Galjoen with rusted hooks in its mouth.  It just rust away and defanatly does not harm the fish.  I will not use stainless steel and to be frank I think it should be ilegal to use stainless.  It is expensive as well.

May be I am an idiot but thats my experiance.

I was brought up in schooling of stainless steel dont rust so rest of that fishes natural life he will be swimming around with that hook wheres as other hooks will rust out in two to three weeks

interesting point about Mustad - I guess Daichii's will rust in less than week as I have seen that they must just smell sea air and they rust

Sharkman I agree with you - it was just odd reading it in Tag and Release article

" if you using J hooks, rather fish with stainless steel hooks. They dont rustand cause infection and in a study were proven to have less negative effect on the fish than regular steel or nickle plated hooks in the event of them being left in the fish " next paragragh is about fishing them barbless - which I agree with and should be done with all hooks

Maybe stainless is better in fresh water as fish do get infected easier in fresh water.

Daichii's rust while you fish with them. :fishn

No seriously I like using daichi's but they do rust easely.

I am against using stainless, ok you say using barbless ones and that is all fine when the fish is hooked in the mouth, but when you get a fish that swallows the hook it is going to eventually kill the fish! I have seen many hooks inside fishes guts in various stages of rusting and i think that the stomach acids do a good job, but that will not be the case with stainless!

I am asking what guys think about stainless steel hooks - because I dont agree with this statement by the angler promoting stainless steel hooks like you say Dorado should the fish swallow the hook its like a signing his death cerificate.

I will fish barbless hooks yes as I have had that discussion with two top anglers who have enlightened me to the use of barbless hooks.

I certainly don't agree with the stainless hooks myself, but there are a lot of different grades of stainless steel. There is one called 3CR12-this is sh#tty stainless, and DO rust easily.(Can't see how it can be called STAINless steel, as it DO stain and rust.) Then there is stuff like 304, and 316 wich would never rust. All I'm trying to say is that maybe this stainless hooks is made off an inferior quality.

As a Commercial fisher for 27 years, i truly hope the goverment bann stainless hooks. The cons overide the pro by far. Acids etc brake down normal hooks between 1 and 3 weeks but stainless kills on longterm ie, getting stuck in the guts of the fish then the bird or the scavanger.

I'm with you on banning them. Our fish stocks are low enough as it is.::respekt:

Once again there is an interesting difference.

Commercial longliners have agreed not to use stainless hooks.

The ball is in the court of the recreational sector.
