Greetings,

I will be departing for St-Lucia on Sat 5 May- Sat 12 May 2012 to do a bit of jetski fishing.I am planning on launching wherever suitable(ski boat launch site in front of where mouth used to be),or wherever is safest and most practical to do so.

As I will be doing this alone,it would be comforting to hook up with fellow jetski/boat anglers for reasons known to all offshore parties,especially those with a single engine.

I hope to see you on the beach as the sun rises out of the ocean!

How did you get on at St Lucia....Maybe going there after the GoFish comp has finished

The fishing was excellent!

The snoek had arrived early and there was a lot of action in front where the mouth used to be.Just behind backline too!There were also quite a few couta around.Also LOTS of baitballs and sprats!Showings on sounder thick!

Bonnies were plentiful!If I had concentrated on just pulling small white feathers I am pretty sure I could have filled up fishbag with these alone!

I would catch a bonnie on feather or spoon in 18m(1 nm) and then hook up as livebait and let it go down on drift.Got a few couta this way and had a couple of screeching reel runs and got bust up/bitten off.

There still seem to be a lot of fish around judging by the FB posts by fishermans st Lucia(Wave Dancer).

Cant wait to go back!

Yes,launched out the umfolozi mouth!

It was as smooth as a babys backside!Launched and beached 9 times,no incident.

The plan of action should be:...get to the beach at 6am and oom Piet(beach control:072 333 1377) will assist you.He drives an old Land Rover.If you are alone,he will reverse you into the water and pull your vehicle to high ground!Cost per launch R55 or R35(member st lucia ski boat club).It is very informal,no scrutineering etc.As long as you know your machine and pilot is good,bobs your uncle....!

From the time that you jump on JS and fire her up,the only thing you must have on your mind is getting through the breakers and finding fish.Piet will take care of the rest on land.From a vehicle and possesion viewpoint,this is probably the safest venue in the country!The only people on the beach are holidaymkers and fishermen.No rabble or opportunists loitering around!

Go and enjoy your jetski fishing without worrying about whats happening on land.If you are feeling adventurous and if weather permits,hug the coastline 12km south to the wreck of the 'Jolly Rubino'.I caught some good bottoms(big Slinger and Rock Cods) in 18m of water,perpendicular in line with the wreck.Any fishbait or chocca will work.Apparently also a good spot for game fish.Look for showings on Sounder and drop.If game fishing,livebait is first prize or a drift sardine on a couta trace.I would reccomend that you go there with others because if alone and something happens,its a lonely place.The only reason i went there is because I followed a boat(the whole safety in numbers thing).

I was bottom fishing and they were game fishing.We were in close proximity to one another,and the feeling of safety was there.They then decided to move off to greener waters and when I next looked around,they were nowhere in sight.I was the only floating thing for miles around.I must admit that from then on,a feeling of total insignificance weighed down upon me.Total trust was then bestowed upon my Seadoo 4 tec,who served me valiantly(luck of the draw)!

I would strongly reccomend St-Lucia as a venue.I had the literal 'fishing time of my life'!No need to travel all the way to Moz to get good fish!

Yes, I can relate to what you said that been alone on a small Jetski on that big ocean can be a lonely place……… 

 

It happened to me while fishing at Ponta in April…..wanted to get away from the bubble blowers so I headed out to one off the deeper reefs.

Took me say 15 min’s to get there, as soon as I stopped and looked around me I could not see land nor any other boats and this lonely feeling came over me !!

Needless to say I just started my JS and head back !

@ Hammer,launching of boats in mouth is possible and on one or two occasions,Wave Dancer,one of the prominent charter boats(a mother of a boat,not sure what kind;2 x 300hp Suzukis) did launch in mouth.I think only on a high or pushing tide.The thing with a jetski is no prop or leg of motor to worry about,very shallow draft!

@ About time,the write up was a pleasure!In doing so I relived the experience !Once the water starts exceeding the 20m mark and becomes that deep inky blue,the sea definately feels different and more powerful compared to when fishing the backline!

if you could not see land then you were close to 30km offshore??????

I know this is a very old thread, but just want to check if it's still the same? Taking the jetski for a week in early December, any comments on vehicle safety etc

there is no beach control anymore as far as I know.
oom piet is nou op pension.

I leave my vehicles unlocked at the beech.
I even leave money in the car and all is left alone.
im normally 1st on the beech and last to leave.
and all is still there!!!

I see guys are launching from maphelane, and this tells me there is no control.

have not heard of trouble on the beech or on the side.
I fish st lucia on my own.

I like making my own tv and do not like to watch tv.
