Currently at comercial marine, shimano vengeance 10ft xh shad rod + shimano sienna 4000 grinder fd and a spool of sufix performance braid all for R750 odd. Very nice kit for entry level.

sounds like a good deal, but im looking for something slightly more expensive as im guessing that would be better quality and would then last longer that i can continue to use once more experienced. Was looking at the penn battle 6000/8000, seems to be a decent enough reel to last? had any experience with it?
and also what would be a good rod to pair it up with? vengeance? exage?

Don't sell the Shad Pro short. It has bigger eyes so you can throw a leader when also fishing for shad. It has a 3 oz. rating and is hmg, so not too heavy when waiding and standing with rod in hand.
It will last you long time allthou a 4000 may be too little.

A 10ft is a lekker length for surf casting, its not to heavy so you can cast for a long time and very good distance can be reached if you get the hang of it.
I have the penn battle, a very nice reel, but the 8000 is definitely to big paired with a 10ft, look at the 5000 or 6000. You will be able to get 300m of braid on, which I think is more than enough.

The vengeance is a great rod i have one and highly recomend them to any one

Here's 1 of the yellow bellys i caught on my last trip to PE it's not a monster but when you fish in the bricks you need a strong rod to bully them out there caves

..Thats a DAMN good looking Kob!!!...Well done!!!4-6inch dropshots and paddle tails. bucktails and rapalas work well too. a few guys i know put bass rattles in the paddle tails with great results. got a few halco bucktails the other day that also have a bass rattle attached. can't wait to try them when Im back in rsa. nice looking kob boss. oh and yes these lures will work in natal.
I think you are sold on the Vengeance. I have a 9 ft paired with a Daiwa Procaster 4000. Great combo! The rod is great for surf drop-shot and spinning although the guru's are of the opinion that it's a bit bulky for estuaries (never had any problems though). I used to battle a lot with wind-knots on a shimano reel (don't know the specs off-hand). I loaded the Daiwa with double x Viper braid - end of wind-knots - what a pleasure!!!
