Probably one of the Spanish longliners that work outside 200nm on its way to Durban to offload.I don't think there's any Spanish boats using SA permits to work inside 200nm but there's quite a few Japanese boats that are.

*Edit*
If you take a look at marinetraffic now you can see him + 2 other Spanish boats berthed at Maydon Wharf. That's where they normally offload.

Hi Andy

Get the photos together and give it to GeorgeNa ir at EKZNW.

Do a short affidavit setting out when the photos were taken and where they were taken.

Drop me a PM if you need more details.

Hey Guys
Thanks for your responces and yes there are three spanish trawlers docked in durban at the moment and if they are only allowed to only trawl 200nm from Durban it certainly is not happening.Who is sopposed to be policeing these guys or are our fisheries getting plundered again due to lack of recources?
please can you provide me with an e-mail address of someone i can forward the imfomation to that will at least give an answer on the subject!!

The Spanish vessels fish outside 200nm but offload in Durban, just because you see him on the AIS doesn't mean that he was fishing, like i said in my first post he was no doubt enroute to Durban to offload, marinetraffic more or less confirms that. They've been doing that for the last decade that i know of.
The foreign vessels that are fishing inside SA's 200nm limit are the at least 6 Japanese longline vessels that have been leased permits to fish there. They don't get to fish there without the blessing of DAFF ok-ing those permits. They have 1 South African aboard - an observer

Well, I have fished behind one of them 9 miles out. Last weekend I saw one of them 15 miles offshore

They were fishing?
There's no Spanish longliners with SA Swordfish or Tuna licences that i know of.
Maybe someones got a joint venture going with some trawlers or prawn boats - that side i don't know about.
That guys track was coming in from the east which i would expect to be normal if he's a longliner.

We fish that area regularly and only come across the Japanese licensed vessels at certain times, have not yet to date encountered a Spannish vessel fishing inside 200 miles.

Most probably a prawn trawler so close in, long liners don't have nets but haul a line that they have set, not much point in setting that close to the beach

Hi KZN

I agree. There are only about 3 or 4 trawlers that are working.

The inshore trawl grounds were reliant on St Lucia and Richards Bay river systems being open and productive. Since they have been closed, there are hardly any prawns left on the Tugela / Tukela Bank.

The guys were fishing offshore on the deep grounds.

I think the Sorensons are the only ones really working now and their boat is quite distinctive.

It is kind of an old herring boat design from the 60's or 70's.

Spanish boats are usually very new. They have had decades of subsidies to spend on newbuilds.

There is no dought these guys are trawling in illegal waters if you zoom into his AIS track you will notice by the speed and directions he is travelling he started trawling around co-ords 29 52 2315 -031 063 3792 at 06h50 wich is 10km off our coast line!!!Yes they will say they are on there way to thier fishing grounds or on thier way back but who knows when they start or finnsh trawling and who is monitoring them??

I remember a while back guys like JB2 saying that unregulated unreported catches in the commercial sector is a bit of a myth and it is soooo tighly controlled and with indepedent observers onboard and now they have no comment, a bit of a cop out if you ask me?
