Southern Oman

Last year Armand and myself put a trip together for ourselves down to Southern Oman to fish from the beach and rocks for bluefish and bream on light spinning gear and fly.

We packed the car and left for Southern Oman for a week long trip. The area is remote with no services and no shops so you have to take all your equipment, camp, food etc. So myself and a friend Armand just managed to fit our gear and ourselves into the car. The journey is about 1,100km so lots of time to plan and re-plan on how the fish are going to take a massive beating from us! The drive is amazing as you travel through the desert and there is a 400km stretch were you see maybe 10 cars, really desolate, almost like what I would think mars looks like! The guys in the other cars get so excited to see another car everyone flashes lights and wave like long lost friends!

We arrived and the excitement soon started to die down a bit when we saw the wind belting the coast. The area is affected by the summer monsoon coming from India and there is some serious wind and weather. September the wind drops and the fishing comes on and can get really good. The only issue is that for our trip I think the monsoon decided it still wanted to stay around a bit longer. We set up our camp on the beach and the week long fishing began. We had endless battles with our gazebo and tent to keep them standing, finally the gazebo could not be repaired anymore so we had to donate it to the rubbish pile, with much mattering of how they don't build things the same these days.

There is no mobile reception so it was pure bliss and all we had to worry about was when we were going to eat our next meal and how we were going to out think the next fish! Although the wind blew we managed to paddle out to a close Island and fish off the island and caught some great fish. Its an amazing place with some great fish. The bluefish get up to 30lbs and there are predatory bream that also get up to about 30lbs. The bream are great fun as they are mainly surface dwellers which is very strange for a bream and the bream also comes into the shallows and feeds on baitfish crabs etc. So all the fishing that we did was sight fishing. The bluefish are in huge shoals and jump once hooked making for some spectacular fights.

I used a Accurate SR12 with 50lbs braid and the new Accurate 15-30lbs spinning rod. I used mainly Orion 40g stickbaits and they worked a treat but a bit expensive when you start getting reefed a few times a day! The new Accurate rod was great and a few times I thought the rod was going to break when I was pulling fish through the surf surge or up a rock face, but the small rod has some serious power.

After a week long fishing holiday it was sad to pack up and leave the fish to fight another day. But in all it was a great trip and I'm planning the next one.

Yup sorry meant shad. Get a bit caught up with the different names out this side.

Out here they call a kingie a trevally and a couta a kingie, all a bit hectic when you first arrive! But as long as the fish pulls like hell it's all good!

Great report and pics Ocean Active- By the smiles on the photos you can see it was a great success. The ones hidden by the bandana, I guess, were hidden because they were to big for the lens.

We have quite a wide range of clients fishing with us, so we get quite a few names thrown at us. The Europeans and Americans call shad Bluefish. So when we use SA names the clients tend to give you a blank look, so we end up using names like bluefish, mahi-mahi, cobia, grouper etc.

I loved this report Nick, thanks for posting it up here again!!
Those bream are insane!! Like Mussel Crackers on poppers!!! They must have made some pretty work of those Orion's after a few!!
Can you post some pics of your 40gram Orions please? Are they mini big foots? Eric doesn't have them on his site, be keen to check them out...

As to the different names... Call a SHad a shad to a US angler, and he's gonna think you are talking about a small river running little baitfish like thing that gets to about 2 lbs if you are lucky... Dolphin/Mahi-Mahi/DOrado, all the same... does get pretty confusing in all, but as you say, so long as the buggers pull like the blazes, its all good!

Fantastic stuff bro, look forward to the next one.

Howzit Nepps,

The Orion Mister Joes are a killer lure. Eric also makes big foots in the 20-40g range but the mister joes work better due to the shape. I have hooked GTs over 40kgs on these little guys but got smoked properly.

The bream and shad also go wide for them, they fish on the surface and just below and you can fish them slow so no probs throwing these things all day!

Nick

Thanks for those pics mate, that Mr Joe looks the business man!!!
Now of course the ultimate question though is availability>??????? DO you stock them? Would love to get a couple to pair up to the coming Ocean Revolution Stealth STK76 and a Stella 6000, or even on the OR Black Devil 100... with a pair of 1/0 or 2/0 ST76's on there they should go like a bullet!

Really love Eric's lures.... I wonder what the Mr Joe would be like in the 120 to 180 gram range... does he make them that size? Or just the Bigfoots?

As many as I get they go out the door the same day or into my tackle box! But I'll ask Eric to send you some if you keen? Really awesome guy and fishes like a machine!

I think the Mister Joes are from 18g-40g, then Big Foot after that.

Cheers,
Nick

Nick,

No doubt they fly out of stock!! Would love to pick up some more Orion lures, and especially some of the smaller sizes too... those Mr Joes look the business!

If you can e-mail me prices, andre@steel.co.za or PM me that would be great bro. If you've got a relationship with Eric already that would certainly help... I've heard he is an incredible angler and fantastic guy too....

Thanks bro, chat soon.

Nick, I met your dad at Shaya Moya. Within minutes we were talking about fishing. What a great old man. He took all his photos of you and him fishing in Oman out, no doubt he is very proud of your success. His prize possession is that little Accurate Multiplier reel that you gave him.
Big ups to you and welcome to Sealine. I look forward to your contributions

The Old Man is awesome and enjoys his trips out to Oman. He always seems to end up catching a massive GT, 2007 he got a 42kg, 2008 46kg and this year 36kg. He used to fish for SA and it is great to see he can still put the moves on a fish at his age!

He recons the tigers at Shayamoya don't pull as much!
