Last year Armand and myself put a trip together for ourselves down to Southern Oman to fish from the beach and rocks for bluefish and bream on light spinning gear and fly.
We packed the car and left for Southern Oman for a week long trip. The area is remote with no services and no shops so you have to take all your equipment, camp, food etc. So myself and a friend Armand just managed to fit our gear and ourselves into the car. The journey is about 1,100km so lots of time to plan and re-plan on how the fish are going to take a massive beating from us! The drive is amazing as you travel through the desert and there is a 400km stretch were you see maybe 10 cars, really desolate, almost like what I would think mars looks like! The guys in the other cars get so excited to see another car everyone flashes lights and wave like long lost friends!
We arrived and the excitement soon started to die down a bit when we saw the wind belting the coast. The area is affected by the summer monsoon coming from India and there is some serious wind and weather. September the wind drops and the fishing comes on and can get really good. The only issue is that for our trip I think the monsoon decided it still wanted to stay around a bit longer. We set up our camp on the beach and the week long fishing began. We had endless battles with our gazebo and tent to keep them standing, finally the gazebo could not be repaired anymore so we had to donate it to the rubbish pile, with much mattering of how they don't build things the same these days.
There is no mobile reception so it was pure bliss and all we had to worry about was when we were going to eat our next meal and how we were going to out think the next fish! Although the wind blew we managed to paddle out to a close Island and fish off the island and caught some great fish. Its an amazing place with some great fish. The bluefish get up to 30lbs and there are predatory bream that also get up to about 30lbs. The bream are great fun as they are mainly surface dwellers which is very strange for a bream and the bream also comes into the shallows and feeds on baitfish crabs etc. So all the fishing that we did was sight fishing. The bluefish are in huge shoals and jump once hooked making for some spectacular fights.
I used a Accurate SR12 with 50lbs braid and the new Accurate 15-30lbs spinning rod. I used mainly Orion 40g stickbaits and they worked a treat but a bit expensive when you start getting reefed a few times a day! The new Accurate rod was great and a few times I thought the rod was going to break when I was pulling fish through the surf surge or up a rock face, but the small rod has some serious power.
After a week long fishing holiday it was sad to pack up and leave the fish to fight another day. But in all it was a great trip and I'm planning the next one.
