SOMEONE TO TEST A PROTOTYPE JIGGING ROD or TWO`

Hi guys. Whilst testing and developing some new rock spinning rod we cottoned onto some new wrapping techniques and I have selected 2 of the blanks for jigging rods

Now being a rod builder who does almost every type of fishing except jigging (don't have such good sea legs) I have got Hennie Papenfuss to test 2 of the rods and want a sealiner or 2 to test the prototypes.

The one rod would be for 100-300gr jigs, nets to be tested and quantified.

The other is a rod I wouldn't like to rate but i reckon 150lbs braid with a 300lbs leader wouldn't be an overkill and I think a 20kg deadlift would be possible, I'm just not strong enough though.

I'm going to build the prototypes in single piece configuration with Pac Bay channel lock reel seats and Fuji BLAG Alconite lo-rider concept guides.

I'm going to build the rods as I feel it, I'm going to let the blank do the talking. tuning and changes we'll make after the testing.

No frills or conditions attached. Rod to be fished and tested and all I would like is clean and objective comments and constructive criticism.

The only condition I've got is that it must be tested on big fish and with a powerful reel, Stella 18, 20 000, Boss Accurate, Saltiga, Van Staal, get the drift

I'm off to Mozambique at the end of the month to fish really great GT and Amberjack spots. The event is going to be covered by Rock Surf and Deep!!! Can get a mention in there!!

Like the sound of that, if it survives Mozambique which I'm sure it will' we'll send it off to the Mountain down South.

Once i get the components from the States I'll post a few build pics and send it off.

What I implied but didn't mention is that the blanks are made in South Africa so we can tune and test as needed.

Happy to give them a test here in Indonesia if we can get them over here. Doggies no problem and big ones to.Amberjack's only to 20kg's though.I will be in Cape Town in December for Christmas with the family. attaching a photo of a Dogguie caught just off the coast of Bali a year or two back. Further east lies a place called Alor where the real monsters hang out - issue is not being spooled - hook ups are the easy part - watching 3-400 metres of braid smoke off the real and you can do zip about it  is the hard part.

Problem is some walk in clients saw the rod in progress and it might soon have a new owner who will test it himself.

But Bennie still has 1st dibs at it. H

Now to play with the Toys, tied a 13kg drum of Glucose to the 200lbs Hollowcore and here's Marius in his first lift.

Martin then had the idea of just lifting slow and smooth is not how it's going to be fished.

Took the rod took up the slack and in one jerk lifted the drum, my heart nearly stopped but then he did it 4 or 5 times, nearly stopping my heart every time with the drum bouncing up and down at the end of the line..................

Quick question - The stick looks pretty long.... can you give us the specs? Any idea what the ideal weight jig would be etc?
Got a lovely curve to it, look forward to seeing more results!

If I'm not mistaken, I think that is his plugging version! Which will do nicely fitted with my Stella 20k SW.

The rod is going to work hard, we only taking 1 plugging rod and it will be used 100% of the time between 4 anglers. So it will be properly tested.

It's a 7'. The guy who commissioned the whole project is looking for a longer rod specifically for Doggies.

In the last 3 trips they ended up jigging with the 8' Hennie Papenfuss Bay Hammer (Popping Rod) as they go all their strikes on the longer rod as they could get more of a flutter, all the pickups were on the flutter and never the upward sweep.

Neps as far as the rating etc, etc this is why we want it field tested. What I've done and felt I'd feel secure in going 100lbs braid and 400gr jigs, but I am alse the first to admit I am not a Jigmaster so I might well be well off in my take on this.

This is why I asked for testing and from there we'll either get the spares returned or beaming smiles with a few pics and we'll know within limits what to rate the rod PE rating, Jig Weight and Drag settings etc.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the reply and feedback, and interesting to hear the observations regarding jigging for doggies. This theory has been put into practise by a number of Rod makers, including Ocean Revolution/Temple Reef with their Black Mostro series, as well as Patriot Designs and Seven Seas with their Doggie dedicated rods being a little longer than your average jigging rods, for the express reason you mentioned... seems Doggies like something similar to the whipping action one uses for old school couta whipping, and the longer rods certainly help achieve this, especially in conjunction with a short wide jig which gives great flutter action on the drop.

We've found that an overhead set up for some reason ( body dynamics perhaps???? ) allows you to, or is easier to get a much longer sweeping action of the rod over a spinning set up.... I guess its the position of ones hands etc when jigging with a spinning reel. So having a longer stick for the spinners for targetting Doggies with smaller flutter jigs is a great idea.
I like the parabolic action too, it will make life easier on the angler when jigging and fighting fish, especially as a longer rod will always put more pressure on the fisherman.... but that parabolic curve will go a long way to easing that pressure.

Very nice Craig, well done on this project, very exciting to see something with such potential coming out of a truly South African stable!!
