I guys, I am new to the jigging scene and would appreciate some help.  I am an old hand at surf fishing and have also done some sea fishing of my kayak. 

I hope to do some jigging of my kayak during my annual trip to Mozambique this year.  I normally fish in the 5 to 15 kg size class.  I would like to get a decent jigging setup (rod and reel) that would not break the bank.  Lure weight would be less than 300 g.  Any help with specific model specs as well as lure specs would be valued.

Hi Bosbok,

welcome to sealine and to the additcion that is Jigging!
Jigging is an unbelievably effective and enjoyable for of fishing, I'm sure you will come to love!

As you will be jigging off a Kayak/Ski, I would say that your rod will be more important than your reel at this stage....
The reasons for this is that you can't really fish 12 kilos of drag off a Kayak now can you? Fishing heavy drags like alot of jiggers do is for boats only really... trying that on a kayak is a sure fire way to end up with your ass in the ocean!

But in saying, you still need a decent reel to handle the riggers of jigging and a nice smooth drag to handle the Braided line you'll be using.
The rod is going to be your most important part of your system here, as fishing from the Kyak, you want something that can handle the lack of manoevrabilty, and make your jigging much easier.

I think if you can give us some idea of a budget you have in mind, for the rod and reel, we can help you out with some recommedations.
One thing I would advise, and I do with all tackle, but with Jigging, its even more important. Buy the very best you can afford... its alot cheaper than replacing inferior equipment later down the line when it fails on you.
jigging is tough on gear, buy the best you can.

Let us know what you looking to spend, we'll give you a few different options.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Agree with you on getting the best that you can afford.   I have to make the most of the fishing opportunities I get and would not want to sit in Mozambique with inferior equipment and no chance of getting it sorted.

I am not sure if a dedicated jigging setup is ideal or if a setup that is also able to chuck spoons and plugs is preferable?  On a kayak/ski a shorter rod makes more sense, but that limits the ability of also casting plugs & spoons.  Jigging is the most important aspect though.

I would not like to spend more than 4 to 5k on the total setup, not sure if that is enough?  Some of the equipment that I have seen favoured cost more than a new ski and a trip to Moz

Bobok - No worries mate, happy to help.

R5K will give you the option of a VERY nice set up mate... The reel is gonna be your biggest cost issue here, but certainly some great options.

We should have pricing etc on our jiggng rods for you by middle of this week, as our first shipment arrives this week.
As this is a non commercial site, I won't be releasing any info on here about pricing etc until we've discussed some matters with Admin.

But what we can offer you is a rod thats as good if not better than those rods in the R 7000 plus bracket, for vastly less.... and will be an unbelievable performer for you.

I'd recommend the 250 gram rated rods, matched with 50lb braid.
You coul look at loading this onto a Torium 20, which will set you back R 1500 or so, probably alot less if you shop around.
Of course be great if you could look to a Trinidad in your budget..... but a Torium will handle very well.

The great thing about an overhead option, especially for a Kayak/Ski, is that with limited space, your Jigging rod can then double as a bait/trolling set up as well.....

As soon as pricing comes out I'll let you know.

If you are set on going with a spinning reel option, then I can give you a cople more options on that front as well.

Off your Ski, what comes to mind first would be a Stradic 8000 matched to a Shimano Beastmaster or similar jigging rod.
Not in the same class as what we'll be offering, but damn fine rods, and the Stradic is an awesome reel!!!

Followed up on the information provided. Did some research on the net and at the local tackle shops.  Tackle shops were of limited help as most of the guys are not familiar with jigging equipment and techniques (they know jack s...). 

Both sets of tackle could work for us.  For the spinning reel option two reels in the 8000 class looks good - Stradic or the Saragosa - which is your preferred option between the two?  As you said the reel looks like the expensive part of the deal.  The Shimano Beastmaster to match the rod would that be the medium/heavy or the heavy?  The medium/heavy rod (BMAXJBT183MS or is it the MH, the one rigged for a spinning reel) looks like the right jig weight of 85-200 g for the setup but I am not sure if the rod / reel (Saragosa 8000F) are correctly balanced?

The overhead option would be a nice option for trolling and jigging.  The drag on the Trinidad 20 (R3070) is obviously ultra smooth.  I have a Trinidad 50 for rock and surf and it gives you an unfair advantage over the fish.  Sadly at the current price the Torium 20 would make more sense. Local price is R1290.  The Torium 30 would be more versatile but not sure if that would be balanced with the rods available.  Please keep me in the loop with the jigging rods you are importing?

i use the beastmaster med heavy and torium 30. As far as I am concerned a very balance outfit and works well for me (but will be shelved once nepps and roy ger=t jigstar sorted). I think the torium 20 will be a more balanced reel on the med heavy beast master as its a matrrow spool and should ahve less reel wobble. Line capacity could be an issue though but i am sure you will get 300m of 50lb braid on there. The rig also makes a nice little trolling rig when space on the baot is limited and I use the same rod for catching live bait, then a trolling rod then jigging. great all round set up. when trolling you have to use quite light drag though as the braid has no stretch and a bif g hit can be nasty.

Bosbok - I have a MH Beastmaster with a Trini 16 on it which for me is a very well balanced lightish "entry level" rig - great with 50lb YGK .  The drag is not very power but as Nepps says on a Kayak you dont wanna be pulled under hey !! I've never fished on a kayak but can imagine....can also thumb it a bit if need be.
