So I went to the Plaat on Saterday to try my luck at cathing some canary kurper to use as barbel bait as I was really looking forward to cathing some decent catsfish. Was planning on going to N-tvl side. Got there at 5:45. Waited for the gates to open behind about 6 other cars. Finally went in only to find the place packed. Only open spots were in the river but due to the rains, there was alot of garbage and crap floating along the the bank. Got a refund and went to the reserve side.
Finally got a spot Just after the bend going right from the entrance looking almost straight at the road coming in. Setup my rods and baited up. One rod I put floats and mieliepap backing. Other rod I put Blou Trein mielies.
Tried catching some vanary kurper on my small rod using kariba worms, but not even a single bite for the whole day. Gave up on the catfish... Will try again soon (watch this space)
Waited about an hour for the first bite. After a nice battle I got my first Roodeplaat carp (+-1kg) in over a year. The fish took on the float and pap rod. Baited up again while talking to my right side neighbour, who came over to find out what I used as bait. Gave him some of my pap as I knew I won't use it all.
Waited about 20mins and fish was on again. Unfortunately it came off about 20m from the side. Rebaited and waited. About 20mins later, fish on! Landed the smallest of the fish for the day. A carp of about 300gram.
Rebaited and waited. Decided to take out the other rod with the mielies and got stuck. Seems that if I go just a little too right, the lines get stuck. So I changed the rig to a single hook setup. Baited up with mielies again and casted.
I decided to take out my other rod as it was lying longer than 1.5 hours. Decided to put on my other reel with the thinner line and take a chance (of getting stuck) and cast out my bait as far as I can. As I reeled in the rod to change my setud I suddenly felt a tug on the other side. The fish dashed to the right, getting tangeled with my neighbours line. Finally landed the fish. A barbel of about 1.5kg. It gave my quite a fight. It is now the 3rd barbel I have caught this past month on carp bait.
By now my pap was getting a bit hard to mould and get onto the hook. So I changed over to a red floatie with red(Vaaldam) dough on the one hook and an almond floatie with white dough on the other hook. Casted it out as far as I could (+-110m). Didn't wait more than 30mins to get my first fish at that distance. It weighed just under 2kg. Went far again and got another 3 carp (one weiging just over 2kg). All the while I did not see any other guys land a fish next me. And my neighbour paying me the odd visit with me giving him a few tips along the way.
At the end of the day I caught 6 carp and one catfish. Dips I used on the bomb during the day was Almond(bitter), Vaaldam/TCP, Just TCP and plain. All fish was caught on just the one rod as the mielies didn't seem to appeal to the carp...
I used rietvlei sliding traces with M1 sinker and size 2 hooks and the hooklinks are all over 13cm long.
Saw my neighbour land a carp over 2kg at around 16:00 using my pap and mixing his Superfeed the way I showed him(after he told me his feed doesn't look like mine did and that he mixes his just as he is about to put it on the spring/sinker).
All in all I had a great day at Roodeplaat. Just hope my luck holds...
