Winter can be one of the most productive times for cacthing beeger bass but you will really have to work for them. One has to fish slower too and there is little surface action for them too.
Winter has always been a plastics time for me and haz proven very good seems all the rats n mice dissappear with the cold till the spring.
I am fishing the vaal river tomorrow - any tips or suggestions - by this I mean I am fishing lures.

KZN dams fish really well in winter. need a boat with a finder to find your drop-offs and bobs ur uncle!
im sorry i was fishing some dams in and around pretoria north and i feel soOOOO sorry for you guys cos the bassing up there is rubbish!we got 3 fish of 1.5kg at Thulani...also fished Vasfontein (5mins from my cousins place!) and some private waters!
We're obviously spoilt ROTTEN here in KZN!!!!
the fish should be fattening up for winter between now and the end of may yet we had to fish SO slowly to get a pull.
I'll stick to nagle and inanda thank you.
those dams...caroline rig, SLOWWww drift up n down dropoffs with a brushog during winter has almost always got us good fish in decent numbers! Jigs also tend to work a charm.
preferred depth varies according to many factors but generally between 19 and 6 metres...don't forget the hyperdermic needle

I've caught the most and for almost a whole two years the biggest fish on each winter trip i went out, and most of this was done with slash-baits but having said that i also had the most fish in the shortest time frame on soft plastics 35 in 1 & 1/2 hours, so, both techniques worked like a charm for me although i prefer sight-fishing for them with a jerkbait.....
But that the bigger ones defs comes to be landed or boated during winter in is not only true for lgf's but for them craps (oooops I mean Carps) and i suppose for many other species of fish too,
I dislike summer fishing and prefer the winter, but again I'm not all that well, ...... in the head.........

What I found interesting is looking back over photos of Bass I'd caught in the last year and checking the dates that they were caught. Its interesting to note that some of the bigger bass were caught in the dead of winter too.
I think weighted plastics like the Zoom Big Ol monster 10" texas rigged in dark purple is defintely my go to lure in cold or miserable weather.

Now whilst on the topic of seasonal fishing, whats you guys takes on fishing (freshies) with relation to the lunar cycle.
I know my father and grand-father used to only fish at a certain part of the lunar cycle, and i know that the tide charts the salties use also has some sort of indicative "best days" marked out in accordance with the lunar cycles, so does some of the magazines......
