Myself Anura and Damon snuck out for a bit of fishing this morning we did our usual early morning start and loaded up the GT bus to head down to the Marina or Mina as it’s called in this neck of the woods. We met up with 2 of our local lads Mohammed and Khaleel who help us on the boats and act as our fixers, translators and PR men in the Musandam both of the guys have caught small GT’s on light tackle but were keen to give the big gear a bash. We are occasionally regarded with a bit of suspicion by the local fishermen so we do everything we can to educate them on what we are actually up to when we’re out fishing and why we are throwing perfectly good fish back in the water after going through all the effort of catching them! It’s the young guys like Mohammed and Khaleel that are invaluable in this regard.

We had a sweet run up to the Musandam but as we rounded the last corner we were met by a howling wind but that wasn’t going to stop us we set up the first drift and Anura had a solid fish take his Cubera 180 in about 5 feet of water he struck hard and we steamed the beastie into deeper water but after a minute or two it came off much to his disgust. Damon and I tried to console him by telling him it was the biggest fish we’d seen this season and comparing his hook setting abilities to a sickly child, there’s very little mercy when the guys go fishing.

Next up was Damon on a Hammer Head I-cup we’ve been having excellent results on these lures with a couple of big Spanish mackerel and GT’s on the boat between the two of us. The fish took the lure in screaming current and put Damon and his Race Point 250 to the test. He hooked the fish in deeper water and fought it from a dead boat lifting it a couple of feet at a time.

We poked around in a few of our Spanish Mackerel spots hoping to get something for the pot but the current was beginning to come to an end so we broke for lunch double checked our tackle made a few lure changes and headed to the next likely spot. The Musandam is a funny place you can have howling winds and raging currents in one area and complete calm in another, the trick is to know which areas will be firing when. One of our drifts has been giving excellent results and we were saving it as our last stop before heading home everyone was fired up and ready to get into the action first drift and bam nothing second drift boom nothing mmm. Third drift and I decided its gamma time; when in doubt break the Gamma out! Two casts and I went tight the water was so rough I nearly fell of the nose of the boat while striking much to everyone’s amusement we steamed the fish off with my spool warming my glove nicely and suddenly slack line, again I get taught a lesson by a GT same spot same lure same conditions same feeling of relief and anger as lose a fish but get my lure back! On the next drift instant replay this time from the safety of the deck I managed to hang onto this one and claimed another fish on my Race Point smiles all round .
With the wind getting worse by the minute we decided to run home a bit early a big thanks to the boss for letting us steal his boat and generally run wild in the Musandam when we have a gap to do so.
