O.k.

Here's a good one with pictures and contributions from a few pro's
The slides, how to clip the sinker as well as a knot or two.

A lot of thought has to go into sliding a bigger bait, the average fisherman will slide a mackie, not to heavy when sliding, max a 7 once sinker and away you go!!!!!!!!!

when sliding a bigger bait 1 kg or so, the sinker must be heavier, or the baits weight will pull it out the sand, the trace will have to be much heavier and have wire on the leader!!!!!!

So even in sliding there are different fish to target weight wise, here or in Durban a lot of small greys average 6 to 9 kgs, that is where your average guy has fun, step it up a notch is a whole different ball game

Ocean i agree with you fully and it becomes very frustrating when you can cast a big bait but choose to slide get a good cast of about 120m in to where the deep water is prepare a very good looking slide bait with gooks nicely exposed and secured and some guy comes and cast 30 meters back from the water which he then only cast 50 meters out (he claims 200) prpares a terible looking bait upside down ect ect and then goes tight with a 100kg fish while you stand there with out even gettin a pull it sucks hey thats why i think that banning sliding in league events was a good choice

I think this will sum up the original question.

Do you need to cast far to get fish.....sometimes
Do you need to read the water like a pro.....sometimes
Do you need to present a bait to perfection....sometimes
Do you need the best and strongest tackle......sometimes
Do you need the best terminal tackle.......sometimes
Do you need all the fancy knot and rigs......sometimes

Fishing is fishing and it's not catching, every dog has his day and luck will fall on anyone. However some have better 'luck' than others. Luck = preparation meeting oppertunity!

Back to slides the only advantage is the size of the bait! I CAN cast a makkie the distance most weekend fishing guys cast thier slides. But I can't cast a 1kg bait bomb that far.

The sharks have always been around, take False Bay, Blue Water Bay......it's just that in most cases they were not attracted by our 'small' baits. I have been picked up a good number of times just behing the shore break when sliding a good sized bait, and that between a good few guys fishing elf and cob size baits.

It's not the distance, BUT THE SIZE that counts!

Hi Trophy.

I've been picked up by a monster at Blougat, 3m from the side with a Sard head, while waiting for the kids to finish up.
It took off in the direction of Noordhoek Ski boat club and gave me back a bent open 7'o Mustad for all my trouble.

I dont think the playing has levelled , the good anglers before sliding is now even catching more fish while the normal/ave anglers now and then catch something on a slide.

Just think about it when one started out sliding for your first time was it easy... i taught myself to slide and the first couple of months was so fustrating...i had no one to show me how to slide.... i dont often fish at deeprocky point's, i'm so use to sliding off the beach now that is't second nature.. at deep water point's one has hight advantage, off the beach one has to time the waves so that they dont break on your bait and get's it tangled up, one also have to watch the current ect.... now how long is it gona take a novas to master all this well at least a year. and by then well hat's off to him for not giving up and his perseverance..  well that's my opinion::respekt:to all that has masterd this fine art in detail....and to the nova's we all started as one.....
