Howzit Guys,

Just a tip!! You dont have to do a new course every time you want to upgrade your ticket! This can be done with just seatime alone. Go to the SAMSA website and download Marine notice 13 of 2008 under section 10 is all the info you need!!

Have fun!!

First, I think you mean notice 13 of 2007 :)

Other than that, other than going from 15 to 40 miles, you still need to do the approved exam as far as I read it (and believe me, I have made numerous calls in this regard as I am in the process).

sorry I meant 2007!! 100% correct nicos you still have to write the extra module! but you dont have to attend lectures etc, that way it should make the cost less to register the upgrade. You should only really write the module that you need to upgrade to not the entire exam! Thats how I understand it!!

Lemon, i'm attending lectures on 5 June with Paul Foder in Pmb. Can you recommend someone for the practical for a Cat C surf launch. I've been put onto terence Tub from Durban Ski boat club who charges R1800 for the 12 surf launches and 25hrs at sea. I obviously would want the best option for my practical training at the cheapest price - Now i sound like an indian fellow and all

Paul is a good lecturer and has plenty knowledge!! I send the guys down to shelly beach to do the pracs with anton! some guys dont like his training as he is very strict!!He charges R2200 for 3 days training which covers the 12 launches, I dont know the other guys, but put it this way For R1800 its a bargain!! I charge R200 per hour from pennington!

Hey Lemon
Is it now possible to write the night rating section of the skippers ticket only ? When I wrote 15 years ago I was naive and thought I would never need night rating . Now that I want to get it I have been told by several sources that I have to rewrite the entire skippers ticket ?

I had that same problem 10 years ago! I thought if i wrote again and failed they would take my entire ticket!! Yes the syllabus is a module system so you need to upgrade to the new SAMSA ticket then complete module 3

Do you still have the old ticket?

Yes I still have the original ticket but really dont feel like having to do a complete new prac with lectures , launches signed and checked off etc . Would rather get legal than launch that hour before sunrise and pick up trouble but what a rigmarole !

The original ticket was done through N.S.R.I. in Durban and I was advised at that time that there was no need to do the night rating then because I could write it at any time later ...
