Sorry for the stupid question, but what is the function of the heatshrink?

I've been experimenting with that bend closer to the coils and I find
That the slide progresses quicker through the water
With weights it has less chance of wrapping too

@ dirk how hard is the tig wire compared too spring wire ?

The heatshrink is supposed to go over the wrapping coils where the swivel is connected, there is a tag end and some people fear that the line might somehow be damaged by this.  See post 32, by Patrick C.

I have only worked with 1.3mm spring wire, so cant compare it to the tig rods, but the rods are plenty strong. I have made about 20 slides this weekend for out trip to Kei, another 20 tonight, and I'm sorted, leaving on Thursday.

@ Boepens, the Tig Wire is a bit softer than the spring wire and also doesn't spring open after you bend it.

I'm certain the S/S Spring wire is stronger but it would not work as per this method shared by DJP. Hitting a chisel in would not open the coils because as soon as you took the chisel out it would close again.

There's a place in JHB I get it. I buy 100mtr at a time and use it for sinkers and everything because the S/S spring wire from Jhb is cheaper than the normal spring wire in EL.

I still have quite a bit but the next time I order I'll give you a shout.

To make things easy to get the  twist/coil wrap the ss wire or tig wire around a couch screw,nice even space no hitting with a chisel saves time.....works for me.

Hi folks! I'm just about to start making some slides for a trip to Florida in May. However, I have looked at the options for the ring above the lead, and the split ring's ive seen don't look up to the job. Can anyone advise what they use?
