Should I switch to braid for better casts

I recently had a chance to use my new Kingfisher Dropzone Rod 10.6ft and Penn Sargus 4000 with 7kg Kingfisher mono on the spool.

Casting plugs 2oz up, I don't seem to be getting the right distance with this setup.

Getting around 80 - 90m and no further.

Should I switch to braid?

Also how do you protect your finger from damage when casting?
Fishing from rocks.

Fluffy answered your question. Braid, leader to braid, no or very short leader, just use a glove or piece of plaster on finger.

most important is to get the right braid.

Definitely go with braid. Go for 20 or 30lb Fireline. I suggest Fireline as its easy to use and cast if you have not used braid on a spinning setup before. I don't use any protection on my fingers and haven't had any problems with the braid cutting me even having fished continuously for 2 days straight. just make sure that your reel is setup to lay the line square on the spool, or if not possible, with a slight taper toward the bottom. Also dont overfill the spool as this will cause headaches with the braid bunching and getting wind knots. Hope it helps!:fishn

Also dont forget to use a decent Fluorocarbon leader of about 1-1.5m joined to the braid using a slim beauty knot. Then join the other end to a no.5 power swivel and use a decent split ring to join the swivel to your spoon, plug or lure... :)

Thanks chaps - will buy some this weekend.

Spending 10 days at Mazeppa again in September, was there last week and had an awesome time, except for people littering on my Fav spots, weather was sunny.

Mustad Ultra Braid / Saltiga Surf Braid or Tripple fish gator braid in the 25lb - 30lb strains would be my choices, price dependant... Fireline is also great...

i use saltiga casting braid, and it has not cut me yet, maybe luck is as important as skill. Although my lure sessions never go over 2 sessions of 2 hours each a day.

Hemps,

IMHO - If you are using 20-30lb braid use 50 lb mono (or flouro, but for long leaders it is a bit too expensive)leader; i normally put on enough leader so that there are 1 or 2 coils of mono on the spool (with the lure hanging in casting position) which is better for the casting finger.

Use a bimini knot on the braid and then connect mono to bimini with a 4 turn uni knot.Cinch the knots tight and trim the tags short so they dont catch when you cast.

Check the mono on the uni, as it is inclined to break after about 3 -4 hours of continuous spinning.I normally retie the uni after 2 hours of spinning.

Hi there, I used Saltiga casting braid on a Jarvis Walker 2000 spinning reel, and lost a lot of lures and patience with all the wind knots hooking up in the guides. I made sure the braid was put on "tight" on the spool, did not overfill the spool, but alas, endless knots,
Please help!!!!!

I see in your profile you are using a 9ft passion stick? The 2000 Jarvis is going to be too small for that setup, but will probably cope for the time being when you can upgrade to a 5000 size reel. One of the main drawbacks of the cheaper reels is that their osscilation is not as accurate as the more reputable brands ie: Shimano.

This is a very often overlooked attribute even in more pricey reels. When using braid, in order to avoid the extremely annoying bunches, the braid must be wound evenly onto the spool by the reels oscillation. The braid should lie flat and even, and should be parallell to the axis of the spool. If the braid forms an "hourglass" shape or tapers narrower toward the front of the spool, you're in for hours of pitching spoons and jigs into the distance for charity, and practising your four letter word vocabulary! If the braid tapers wider towards the front of your spool, you're still ok but will sacrifice distance, but shouldn't get bunches.

What happens in the two previous examples, is that as the braid is being whipped off the spool at lightning speed, towed by your 2 ounce spoon aimed at the horizon, is that as the braid is pulled off loop by loop, it pulls forward, and loosens the next few loops on the "downhill" section of the "hips" of your hourglass or forward tapering braid, resulting in a bunch of loose braid that slips over the front of the spool before its turn has come, and instantaneously forms a weavers nest on your first guide. Normally resulting in a loud "CRACK" like a whip as your 30lb braid parts at the speed of sound and keeps following your 2 ounce spoon to the horizon.

Most reels worth their salt have small adjusting shims or washers that can be stacked on the shaft under the spool, thereby controlling the lay of the line on the spool. More washers position the spool further forward, resulting in the braid tapering narrower towards the front, less washers create a taper towards the bottom as the spool is positioned further aft. The washers come in different thicknesses so your line "lay" can be positioned very accurately.

Purchasing a reel with these features may be a more pricey investment, but will give you hours of trouble free use and satisfaction, and will last almost forever with correct maintenance. I would recommend the Shimano Stradic or, if you can afford it the Sustain for your application both in 5000 size. Both these reels have the right features to give you years of trouble free service. The Daiea Excellers are also a more inexpensive option but do not last as long as the Shimano's.

Hope it all helps!

I would suggest 30 pound saltiga braid, then stitch a 55 pound braid leader onto the front, around twice the rod length. then a short floro leader.
You dont want your braid to nylon connection inside your eyes at all as it will often catch an eye through the cast and slow everything down thus causing the braid to wrap an eye and part, or it will simply damage the nylon thus weakening the knot. the thicker 55 pound braid leader stops the braid from cutting into your finger during the cast.

Lol
Off a boat ofcourse !
Or did u spin for karanteen off st francis point and the tail picked u up ?

I heard a few people hooked into some sick tail, all in the 13kg range LOL

But let's be honest, how much 30lb braid can u fit on a shimano 4000 ? Daiwa normally has "deeper" spools, so take a little more line
And what braid also, fireline is a thick line, mustad much thinner.
