Yep, I agree 100% with TFM.
There are a mill different type's of rods, each build for reason. What ever the reason is you need to go and find a rod that suits your style, boat and most NB your pocket. That is why when a question pop's up there is a million and one diff suggestions made, based on personal prev.

For instance I have long softer rods for pealagics and drop shoting and then short stiffer rods for bottom's using bait.

The Shimano Trevala 6'6" jigging stick is one awesome rod for the ski.
Was recommended to me as an overall. Best in range.

Recommended to any ski fisherman. ::S

Hi guy's. I have 3 of the Elbe tarpon 6 ft 5/7 kg rating rod's. They are fantastic and I have pulled a lot of fish on them including some big sharks and skates! I have 2 set up with my Shimano 15/30's and one with a good coffee grinder for spinning or bottom. My main running line is Kingfisher giant abrasion 30 lb. These Elbe rod's retail for about R 185 ea, fantastic value. Eye's are chrome and a bit cheap but the rod's are solid and all round built like a brick &*%$ house. My 5 cents worth and a bit late.:kaykak

Adrenalin Fishing also have a range of kayak rods - Ski Havoc. Great for bottom fishing and trolling. 5ft and come in 3 different weights. 2-5kg, 5-7kg and 6-9kg.

What's a good coffee grinder to pair up with an Elbe ski pro (5.6ft)? Something decently priced.... Thinking of getting a 5 inch KP for it but just want to know what's the options with coffee grinders.

Shimano Stradic, good seals and last long enough but would rather recommend Multipliers or the KP as most if not all Grinders hate the amount of dunking and soaking they're going to get in on and around a ski

Ok sweet thanks guys. Think I'll just get a KP and load it with some braid, lol just worried about my knuckles as i don't have that much experience with them besides abit from my deep sea trips.

I hooked something big at vetch's on fri morn on my bottom trace and whole sard, was on for about 20 min and was getting towed towards the front of the harbour mouth, with my anchor! I eventually made my drag a bit too tight and lost it. Pity I'll never know what it was, thought it was a Rockcod when I 1st hooked it because we caught quite a few before that (all undersized and released) but when he started running I realised it wasn't.

1st time using my Elbe ski pro and I can tell you it's a great rod, well worth the money! Can't say the same for my Okuma Beachmaster reel which after that fight isn't working

Reez like we've been telling you,the kp option with braid is best as it is cheap and almost maintainence free as you say you don't have experience with it,try going for the kp with a drag,its easier to handle...KP (feel the fight inch for inch boy!!!)

Yes I told you I'm going to get a KP but I don't know if you get a 5" kp with drag... Don't want my fingers getting hurt like what that shark did to yours! Lol.
But once I do we need to go back for the 1 that got away!:kaykak

Does anyone know if you get a 5" kp with drag and if so, where and about how much?

Personally I will go for a smaller diam. reel and build your own drag system on it with different size/diam. hose slid over the shaft bracket.

Thanks psy. Won't smaller than 5" be abit too small though? It's going to be paired up with an elbe ski pro 5.6ft rod. As for building my own drag system can I find a how-to on this on sealine?

Hi Reez, there are so many options and schools of thought when it comes to reels and what works best on a ski(kayak). I purchased 2 Shimano 15/30's a year back and I tell you they are very simple reels to open up and service with very few working parts to worry about. They have good drag's and I find them potent for pulling lots of mixed species. I also use other reels(coffie grinders) but these are by far the easiest to service and maintain. If you get into a habit of flushing them off after every outing and giving them a service once a month, you will get many years of good service out of them! I am lucky enough to have an old Abu Cardinal about size 5000 and that reel is amazing in terms of service.The Abu is the exception when it comes to grinders as it is well sealed from dunking's etc and also easy to service. I would not fish with a Scarborough unless I was a 1 rod fisherman.I use 4 rods equipped with reels with good drag systems and dont have to worry about overwinds etc when I am fighting a good fish on one rod. Just my cents worth. :blah:kaykak

Diff strokes for diff folks. Guess it boils down to personal preferance. So you only fish with multipliers rob?

Psy think d shop you referring to is fishermans warehouse.
Checked there already they only stock kp's with drag from 7" upwards.

Think I'm going to go with a kp, there must be a reason why they're still popular so many years on and having never used 1 on a regular basis before (other than deep sea) I would like to find out what that reason is.

Although I would like to eventually get a shimano 15-30 as well for another outfit, don't like the idea of using my sl30 and 50 off the ski.

I agree with you, I would not use a Daiwa sl on a ski. I dont only use multipliers, as I mentioned I also use an old Abu cardinal coffee grinder and a Shimano solstace 4000 and 2 x Shimano 15/30's. I am using 4 rods for varying applications. Kp's are great reels, just different strokes for diff folks. Good luck with your choice and tight lines.

Hi Guys, was wondering if you could give me more information on why you don't use Diawa SL's on your skis? The reals have been recommended to me, to be used on ski. I personally am a firm believer in Shimano & their fantastic quality that lasts but was looking at getting 2x 30SL for my kayak as they are a cheaper option. :kaykak

Sl 30's are great reels. But have a close look at whether you can easily service them yourself at home and easily flush them off/out. Reels on a ski are always being splashed with sea water. No reel is subject to more abuse than on a ski. It take me about 5 minutes to open up and clean out one of my shimano 15/30's. Now that in my book is quick. I looked at a variety of reels and made a decision based on the above as well as line capacity and drag pulling power! It's really a personal choice. If you like the look of the sl 30's and you can clean and service them quickly, go for them. Daiwa, shimano, penn etc etc. All good gear and its sometimes, the finer detail or spec's, drag pulling power or servicing and how durable in salt water etc a reel is, that will sway a buyer! :blah:kaykak Enjoy and have fun.
