Most guys that fish a lot of rock and surf will use cut/short gumboots with neoprene socks so I wouldn't go without it (you can put inners in them to make it more comfortable). But for comfort (beach) a pair of those rockies or Crocs will work.
Only problem with open shoes are the risk of cuts or urchin spikes, and you really want to make sure that doesn't happen on a remote fishing trip.

The problem for the older guys, is those bad ankles, especially when you forget that you are almost 60 and those ankles is not that strong anymore
Damm, a twisted ankle and "cut shin" is not nice. It takes ages to recover and mend again![]()
