Shark PODs - Yes or NO?

Hi there,

I have checked but couldn't find any previous discussions regarding the use of pods when diving in the Cape waters.

What are the general feelings about these contraptions. Do they work, and if so, are they a necessity.

Please let me know

Thanks and have a great one.

I think it will most probably not stop a charging shark but it should ward off the curious ones that could potentially turn into charging ones.

This link will show that they don’t really deter a super hyped-up shark:

The bottom line for me is prevention is better than cure so I use it whenever I dive in a spot where I have seen or have heard to be sharks – so pretty much everywhere except some spots on the West Coast...

we discussed the pods quite a while back, cant find the thread!

I personally know someone that was almost attacked by a white wearing one of these, the shark buggered off after he kicked it and prodded it with a speargun!

I have never used a pod but some of my friends have used them and they all said they sometimes get shocked by the pod if you lift your one flipper/leg out the water?

Also hear that they some times dived in sharky water with the pod on , only to find out later the battery went flat so most of the time it was off in the water.

You sure the shark wasn't trying to deter the spearo ;)

I personally wear a shield when diving areas known to hold GWS (and only when the conditions allow),but also in no way think that it is absolute insurance. To date there are still no fatalities of divers wearing a shield and using it correctly (a commercial diver was attacked on the bottom by a shark while a POD was attached to a float above him some time back in Australia, can't remember if he even had the POD switched on).

I was told by a reliable person that Mark White (no pun intended) was attacked by a white while he had his pod on at Cape Point a few years back, the shark rammed him a few times until he got on the boat. I don't know how well they work but if it works at all then its definitely worth having.

off topic - Check if your life insurance or full disability - covers you for spearfishing as most don't, they should say that if you wear a pod you are covered as then you will know with out a doubt that they work 100% - just my 2 cents

Make sure all your dive buddies have em too then, cos I and plenty other spearos rate they bring the sharks in. some of them have never seen a white in 20 years diving, with the shield on..they've been seeing plenty!!! I personally dont think they work, Mine's been used once or twice...and it now lives in the cupboard. Wear them by all means, but don't dive spots you would normally not dive, in viz you would normally not venture into, just because you have a false sense of security.
Its pretty fun going into the water and wondering if you're going to get eaten, adds some extra excitement :)
