Shark Fishing off a Fishingski

Im good friends with 2 of the 4 guys on that trip. Those are Salmon Sharks, very close relatives to the White. The 4 of them were equipped with camcorders and cameras. They trolled whole 10 to 15lbs salmon. They planned to stop fishing when one of them hooked up and record the battle and help land the fish. Well when the call came over the radio that the first had hooked up within minutes of dropping in, the rest tried to get their lines in to no avail...they all hooked up. a small motorboat helped them land the first one. the rest were landed by the yakkers cooperating. they harvested the largest 2, the biggest went 350lbs, caught by my buddy, Allan Sansano. Later, in his typically understated manner, he told me he felt that it was boarderline dangerous. Ha NO S#!T !! Allan Bushnell, my other buddy on the trip said he had a hard time paddeling towards these fish breaking the water, rather than away from them.
I personally survived a serious Great White attack while surfing Mossel Bay Outerpool, so you wouldnt catch me anywhere near this trip.i use a shark shield whenever on the salt. Funny, no ones tried it since..
here is a youtube link to their crazy session..

Years ago my late Dad worked in a fish processing place in Atlantis, and used to send me fish to Durban via airfreight, and the best tasting "fish" he ever sent me was something he called a St Josephs Shark. It tasted better than the kingklip he sent.:sha

Maybe a similar situation.

I can understand the concept of fishing the bigger fish for the sport there of, but a 35lb fish can fight like a 350lb if you go light on the tackle.

was fishing in Mexico, and when the game fish were not biting, the skipper decided to fish over a reef. Not much fun catching reef fish with a reel made for hauling in Marlin.

Dieterd ...i hear you on the st. Joseph Shark.... Never prepared one myself, but it does rate quite high on the taste buds.

Good on Ya Mate .... We had a great trip, went up the West Coast of Oz, some highlights were snorkeling over the reefs, really cool and then seeing and feeding wild dolphins at Shark Bay.

The water ther is so flat its unreal, and fishing off skiboats is big, at Exmouth, we sat next to a slipway at the small harbour for about an hour watching them bring in the skiboats, two at a time, at any time there were 10 boats on the slipway and as many waiting in line. Seems like every retired Ozzy has a boat & caravan, and they all escape the cold & wet of Perth and go North. Middle of winter we were walking around in shorts and swimming.

We also visited Mauritius on the way back, I would love to take a kayak there and paddle right around the island. Fishing there also big passtime, and the curried octopus in a french loaf was tasty.

One of the most crazy thing to see in both places is how people can leave their posessions easily accesible, and no one bothers to steal it. Boats moored 10 m off the beach, waist deep water and no one touches them? We did a glass bottom boat ride in Oz and the operator tells us to leave our shoes on the beach, obvioisly used to South Africans, he starts laughing and says, "Dont worry Mate, they will be there when we get back" Very funny

Good to be back though, now lets get some good weather.

Cheers
