Shad season is finally here! I have never caught shad but would like to get my share this season. Any good spots in the Cape Town area? I know the guys are talking about the Gordon's Bay wall. Maybe that is a good start for this weekend. Tight lines!!

Try any place from Bailey's cottage (Muizenberg) on a nice low tide with coloured water to Gordons bay harbour when conditions are right. e.g 20-30 km SE wind

I agree that 30cm is way to small. I will never keep a small fish like that. Go big or Go home!
:wfish

most guys that fish for non-eds will be take a 30cm shad , no problem, as this will be use for bait.

SO to the eds  guys that take 30cm elfies home please do me a favour, when u preparing the elfie to be consumed, chop off the head and tale , measure it please, u will be left with a elfie of about 20cm , then fry it and take a measurement again, probably 10cm.....

I hope I'm not misunderstood here.

I've never caught a shad (only one that released itself near the kayak, size unknown) and after the carnage of young shad on the KZN coast during the last sardine run, I don't think I want to catch shad.

the most well known spot for shad is blakes beach in strand. the first promising dates for that area are next weekend from the 10th December...

hopefully they show up this year and have some size to them...

i wait the whole year for summer, spin for shad then slide them live later in the night. Aah, summer rocks!

I agree with the cuttin' off of tail & head section to size, but fish don't shrink when you fry or braai it like red meat do. Yeah I'm  a cook to LOL

You don't know what u'r missing. Best fighting fish on light tackle. Best tasting when smoked or fried. Don't be put off by the KZN carnage.

Catch u'r size & quota when needed and enjoy. Be at least prepared to try something at least once and then make a judgement call
