Road Trip Report.

With much anticipation the Sunday finally arrived which was to be the beginning of our road trip or for me hoping it will be a epic road trip considering i know what potential the area has. First stop was decided to be Witsand then leaving for Port Elizabeth.

The morning itself started off well while getting bait until the bakkies keys was lost in the lagoon . It being a Sunday and a generous beach goer allowing us to make a phone call we soon had the cavalry by us. Only problem they were not equipped to help with bakkies keys. So started the phoning around for a 24hour locksmith.

All contacted could either not help with bakkies type keys or passed us on to someone else who was also not prepared to work on a Sunday though its 24 hour services? Only 1 contacted was keen to help but only on the Monday. Leave the bake parked there overnight or try someone else was our only other option. Last person we could think of was contacted who soon put us on someone else who was able to help. So with assurances in hand or hoping so we decided to go on with our bait collection as we stopped when we realized the keys was lost.

A few hours later guy makes his appearance and removed bakkies ignition and to cut a new key for new ignition as well as calibrate new key/alarm to ignition and transponder box etc. By now it was about 4 hours later roasting in that hot sun. All we could now was wait for guy to return from his workshop with everything etc.

So on we proceed with the bait collection session. Finally the guy arrives and installs everything much to our delight and relief. With enough bait and roasted we left. Got home to shower and pack bakkie we were about 5 hours late already but no stress as we on holiday.

Got to our first destination being Witsand after 23h00 i was too tired to fish. One in the group who was not with during morning/afternoon ordeal decided to fish and was rewarded with a big stump nose during the night on octopus bait fishing at The Blokke.

At almost first light and tide receding we fished the area as we have done on a few occasions before. Preparing to fish Port Elizabeth for Poensies / bronze bream that was on my bucket list never having caught one before i had removed old line from my reel and filled up with fresh thicker line in anticipation of a Poensie picking me up i made my first cast in Witsand resulting in a small overrun with sinker landing almost in front of me. While untangling this small mess i got picked up by something small resulting in a stump nose. Quality fresh bait. Next cast again with both me and uncle on. This lasted a few minutes with the tide now receding faster and me walking to a different spot. New spot delivers a nice size cape stump nose. Soon after we left for Suzy's or now Anchorage restaurant where i fish to the right closer to the mouth and other 2 in front of restaurant. By now water was low with no bites.

We made breakfast and left after 09H00 for the next and final leg of our road trip that will be until Friday.

Turning onto the N2 with Breedes welcoming board on our right we were to stop next at Plett to fill up. This is to take us past spots like Stil Bay / Boggoms Baai / Gouritzmond / Mossel Bay / Wildernis ETC. Always a joy seeing these beautiful areas. Reach Plett and fill up. Bakkie has a 125l tank :?. Not cheap but did budget in advance towards most things before leaving. For now only the bakkie replacement key ( R2500 ) was not in the budget.

From here its non stop to Port Elizabeth. Reach our hotel late that afternoon to unpack and relax. Next day we check out Swartkops River after first popping in at Alcocks Tackle topping up on sinkers / bait cotton / Alcocks lures like the double spoon and the Gamtoos or Swartkops special lead head. i decided on the 1oz spoon and olive and 1oz white lead head. Lando on hand with great fishing info and jokes etc.

We meet a guy there who tells us he will be at Swartkops if we interested can meet him there where he will show us some spots etc. Got there later while he is spinning. speak to him a bit and left for a other spot. While driving away we noticed him on with something. Reversed and stood while he plays the fish. eventually fish comes off in front of him. A skipjack we told. Soon after he hooks and looses another skippy in front of him in the rocks.

We unpack then start spinning. Nothing hooked for a while then we left. Fished a few other spots at the river but nothing. Just before leaving we meet an elderly gentleman also from Cape town who tells us he will show us some spots to fish. Excited as now we have extra information and not just fishing blindly we left for the hotel. They meet up with us at the hotel where there is a lot of fishing talk and other nonsense to see us through the night.

Armed with fresh info we decided on spots to try but soon we will change our mind often lol. To be continued.

Day 3 the wind had calmed down. Wind had now changed to a westerly from a easterly bringing on a swell for Receif area if i remember correctly. Choice was made to fish for elf/shad at the wreck or surrounds. Armed with very nice squid from Alcocks and by the way the boats could be seen fishing for them at night from our hotel room in the bay as well as frozen sardines and bloodworm we left our room.

Arrived at the spot only to discover we can't lock the bakkie. Starting to worry now as we have only the spare remote that seemed faulty we packed everything back in the bakkie to head to town. Through the morning rush Google put us on a place that installs car remotes etc. Waiting for them to open after a while we told by numerous persons that the person responsible is not there. Waisted about an hour. Google another place to find guys there more helpful. Gentleman in wheelchair quickly clones second alarm box. Sorted we leave to finally go fish.

Once again we unpack and tackle up. Find 2 locals with bait pumps. Decide not to fish the wreck. On our way down 2 locals return with sand prawn. Quick chat and they inform us where to get this bait as well as armadillo they had. Great stuff. They tell me they off to Receif for bellman. Out with the bait pump and not long i have some lovely lively sand prawn. Not those gross mud prawns that i have no confidence in whatsoever despite it working for many a fisherman.

Not sure where to go as everywhere looks awesome i make a hard right climbing over some high rocks and through some deep gully's. Nice omo water working nicely with incoming tide. Remind myself to watch exit route i came through if it gets too dodgy here. First cast sees incoming tide drag my 5oz sinker behind some large reefs further in. Great.. how am i to land something with these huge reefs in front of me. Almost immediately receive an enquiry and vas, Drag fish through the reefs with leader much to my relief. Good size blacktail with colors I've never seen before on this species. Like a copper tinge that changes to awesome purple in the sunlight. Most beautiful blacktail i'd ever caught lol.

Stood there simply admiring this fish. Looking at area can only think its a camouflage thing? Next cast and vas into another sizer blacktail. Similar dark colouration to first one. Start loosing a few sinkers with strong current and splashed constantly by huge waves. Decide its time to leave only my escape route is too deep to wade through. Not knowing the area i walk to my left and find water deep enough to wade through without risk.

Starting to understand this place now. Pack bags at pool while member of group goes to the left of pool. I decide to stand on top of pool wall. Here i was to land another good size blacktail as well as a stone bream. Stone bream a first for me. Fish quickly released. Decide to get out the noodle stick to have some ultra light tackle fun. Same spot and not able to cast more than 30 meters. First cast to the left. Second cast to the right. Both nothing. Third cast to the middle then it happened. Big musselcracker picks me up drag screaming like crazy. Can feel fish pulling line through reefs as every cracker i caught thats big enough to take line has done. Got that sinking feeling but hoped as i fought this fish. I would somehow with that light rod after that awesome first run turn its head through the reefs and bring fish closer only for fish to turn its head and peel drag off at rates. Again through the reefs with the 20lb braid but this time i could actually see the fishes huge tail out the water as it struggled to rid itself of the hook. Only thought that was now going through my mind is if that fish is able to pull more line its gone. A few seconds later and TWANG. Fish off. Fish of the trip so far and sunken feelings.

Walk back to big rod and same spot. First cast and something smaller but decent picks me up only to run into the rocks closer to me. Some dangerous rock climbing and i free a lovely 2+kg musselcracker from same spot i lost the larger one not long before. Fish released. A few cats laster when i manage a small two tone finger fin. Another first for me. Had 3 fish on my bucket list to tick off and managed on first day to get 2 not originally there but 2 i not caught before. Will take that. After this we left back to the hotel.

Later same gentleman also from Cape Town pops around showing us photos of a huge kob caught at the Sundays River. Its decided to show us Brighton Pier. Get there to find lights shining on the water. Told to look properly we see schools of mullet as well as small bellman. Unbelievable. Stick around a while only to see huge grunters occasionally make an appearance. Totally unbelievable. Jokes start flying round if it was Cape Town locals will be shooting the fish out the water or knocking one another senseless to get to spots fish were seen lol.Locals find it uninteresting.

Get shown more photos of other big kob by guys on Pier caught close by. Unbelievable. Leave for the hotel room for some much needed rest.

Day 4 starts off with the need for a camera battery charger. The day before we had spent time in a mall also looking for a battery charger.. now again. All cool by me and so the walking round in a second mall starts again. Only this time a need for a three quarter pants also creeps in. In and out of tech and clothing shops as well as a cash converter checking out if there are any second hand tackle on sale. One shop is decently priced on the charger but not bought.. the pants can't be found and Cash Crusaders has a koffiemeul or grinder at a good price for the 6ft rod.

Brunch is bought while we are there. Sorted we leave again for Marine Drive. This time though uncle has stomach issues. Not in the mood for fishing but soldiers on. Get to the parking lot and meet a elderly local man. He caught one nice elf/shad at the wreck or boiler as thats all thats left really. He gives us some pointers while i help him out with a plaster. All packed and ready to go once again the bakkies alarm won't work. Not again. Uncle decides he alone will have it checked out. After a few calls he gets assurance he will be reimbursed when back home as he wants the anti - hijack completely removed. We decide to fish the same spot while he has car sorted.

Get to spot and make bait. Lovely bait attained i notice a nice big deep hole on left of us and tell other member of party i'd like to fish there as there is a gentle role of tide slowly pushing but water looks deep enough to hold fish. While getting bait i had a good look at the spot from the previous day where i lost that cracker. Spot was fished during high tide with now on the low all the reefs was exposed and boy was there a lot in front of us as well as deep making for deep gully's between reefs. Awesome spot but if on with a decent fish there are a lot of obstacles in ones way even during a spring high tide. Not an easy place to fish and high tide somewhat did not tell the whole picture.

Get to spot and member of party already has some fresh bait in streepie and stump nose. Now on with a small cracker. This fish was released. Afterwards i realized i bought a waterproof housing for camera from China thats less than half the selling price locally that would of given awesome footage of cracker while we had it in a small pool. I make a few casts but nothing happens and don't feel this spot. Decide to look for some bait in the rocky pools. Find a few armadillo ( I'm in possession of fishing and bait license ) and decide to feed some of the klipvissies. I soon also come across a huge tortoise that appeared out of nowhere. Other member while i was picking up rocks looking for armadillo checked out the spot i lost the cracker before. Unknown to me while he's walking to me tells me he has a present for me!? I'm thinking what the hell you talking about. Out comes a trace and i can see its mine with the luminous bead. Yip he picked up the trace that the cracker broke off the day before. Tells me a nice memory to have. I'm thinking more like nightmare lol. Small piece of braid still attached. I wonder how that fish came off as hook was perfect and not bent. Will never know!

Now ready to fish the spot from the previous day other member informs me uncle arrived and needs help with food as bakkie is sorted. Get there he tells me the anti - hijack was removed at a few grand cost that will be reinstalled when back home. He decides to make a few casts despite his stomach issue then tells me the lady at installation centre asked him if there was a tower close by. His answer to her was no but he now saw on the opposite side of the road 2 huge cellphone towers. Its these towers that was interrupting the signal from key alarm box to alarm. Eish. 2 days of waisting hours trying to fix this alarm box when there was nothing wrong with it.

Anyhoo we go fish. Get to spot where other member already lost 2 big cracker. I stand next to him when his picked up by another big cracker that again runs him through the reefs. Again see the fishes tail sticking out the water. After a while he looses patience and breaks off. 2 the previous day and now 3 on same spot. Amazing. He leaves to have some lunch while i fish the same spot. Finally get my first enquiry of the day and can feel its a really decent fish but not strong enough for powerful runs. I eventually land one huge 40cm John Brown / Jan Bruin. Fish was measured day later when frozen and cleaned. Not much happens after this where we decide to fish either Something Good or The Pipes.

Get to Something Good where i observe guys in water swimming and notice strong under current. Not in the mood for strong wash really then move to parking. Park there with waves breaking over wall onto car. Other 2 ballies lol decide to stay in car listening to rugby. I decide to take rod off roof in howling wind. First time i fished here almost 12 years ago i caught a blacktail lol. Day 3 we ended here where i caught a fat Frans Madam on first cast that will be used for bait in future. Get to first spot still in sight of bakkie and make a cast. Pension Pipe or 'set it and forget it' now with as its surf. Almost immediately tip gets pulled down in a lazy powerful fashion only i know it can only be weed or grass. Reel in to find a lot of grass. Move about 10 meters to the right with same result. Move again until nothing. Okay clean spot. Only here i land another blacktail. By now im out of sight of ballies who did not want to fish. And so it will repeat in a short space of this beach where in the space of an hour i will land 8 blacktail and 2 zebra/wildeperd. 3 blacktail and both zebra released. Previous best on Mr Humble Blacktail was about 3 in a day. Here in a short space for about an hours fishing i catch 8. A new P.B lol. Sun starting to set fast now with uncle also ready to get back to hotel as we have to leave the Friday for a wedding the Saturday. Uncle laughs and shakes my hand at all the blacktail and while there i land the last 2. i didn't bother telling them after first blacktail haha. This spot fished on the high till start of the drop delivering so much and not even fished from low till low or further up the beach proved amazing. Guys we met the day before told us of the potential on the falling tide to reach reefs further in with species like cracker and grunter. Come to think of it other spots fished in patchy fashion also not fished from low to low proved amazing. Leaving me with a lot of what if's!

Get to hotel and clean fish. Sun almost set and wind howling like heck its cold. Clean 'em at the hotel but not the beach. Everything in hotel room packed properly as well as the bakkie for next morning for our final days fishing.

Supper made we relax. In hindsight the area proved to give 2 to me new species ( Stone bream & Two Tone finger fin ).. 2 mussel cracker that i have not caught for a while.. a P.B Jan Bruin that i was later to discover is 3cm bigger than the official S.A Senior Light Tackle Record.. a new P.B in quantity for humble Mr Blacktail.. i was told some of the Baaiers or locals frown upon humble Mr blacktail with all the more glamorous species available.. well whatever.. witnessed those Silver Dream Machines appear from the darkness into the light almost right under my feet at the Pier all the while having fished for 2 days that was interrupted by walks in malls and fitment centers that took hours from fishing time.

While driving back the Friday we ( or more so me pushing the envelope ) decide on a yearly fishing pilgrimage of sorts as we barely scratched the full potential with all the guys met and advice given. Spots like Receif that i wanted to see and fish we never got to do. Spots like the Canons at the end of the road also was not fished. The Sundays and Swartkops was not fished. Time was not on our side. We were told of The Willows where you walk out your bungalow and onto the beach where you fish. Sounds uncomplicated in a great area. Place seems well priced if i budget in advance. Bait and chow not far away which is also a win win. One thing decided on immediately is no walking around in malls. None of us had families with to boot and we f-i-s-h-i-n-g. At the time it seemed necessary though.

I'll take that any day of the week. The Friday morning early we left back home.

Leka report and pity about the bad weather. If I may ask, where was this spot you lost all the cracker? Recife is also a very good fishing area with a few good spots and a huge variety of species to target.

It sucks when unforeseen incidents happen !!
What was the estimate cost involved you spend on the bakkie
even when it was not necessary ??
Just in case something similar happen to any of our members.

top placemark is where 2 cellphone towers now stand.. middle place mark is small parking spot that if you walk straight along the path will be at the wreck, theres a house on the right where the path begins.. bottom is wall of pool we stood on that to your left of the wreck, further to left also a good option as in how video no 4 begins.. hoping theres a next time to fish Receif thanks.. hope it helps

thank you.. was my uncles bakkie.. R2500 for replacement keys for 2006 Colt V6 and about R3500 to have anti hijack disabled.. that was figure given to him and could be out by a bit.. he needed to know before having it done if he will be reimbursed by company that installed the system that was a few months old.. did not follow up with him though.. might update or edit this as he wants the footage to watch of the trip so will speak again to him regarding this

Thanks for the reply. I know exactly where it is now. Leka spot. If you went a bit further down to the left there's another spot called oorspring klip. Some cricket bat elf lurking there.
