Just want to find out if anyone went to Rietvlei dam lately?

Any help would be appreciated. Me and a few of my BASS buddy's want to go make a few lines wet there this coming weekend and just want to know if it is worth the effort.

Hey New-B,
Welcome to Sealine

Reitvlei - is very very unproductive for bass - got a lot to do with the polution in the dam.....
Rather go to Roodeplaat if the Hyacyinth is not too bad

how is roodeplaat at the moment?
Haven't been there myself of late but my scouting sorces indicated that they have apparently started the spraying of the hyacinth and it's starting to die off, however on Saturday eve another bloke called me to say that the river on the old Aventura road is completely blocked with the hyacinth's up into the mouth and as far as the eye can see towards the rest of the dam.

About three to four weeks ago you could still fish NT angling grounds, Hengelaarsvriend and the big Nat. Res. but not the side where the boat launch is, so it seems pretty much stuffed as it's been for some time now....

Sorry if this is bad news but that's the info I have...

that's what i was told wherever i enquired, each and every answer was zero. and i even went out once to make sure, and yes once surely cannot be considered to be deffinitive proof of their absence but still....

Rietvlei Dam (Pretoria) used to be a Bass dam of note!

You could pick up both Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass (Northern strain) in the 1970s.

See the pic for an old cover of "Stywe Lyne": This 4,2kg (9.24lb) Northern strain Bass was caught by Poen Oelofse in 1973 in Rietvlei Dam near Pretoria on a small sinking Rapala Countdown. A similar Bass of 3,9kg (8.58lb) was caught about half an hour earlier in the same spot by another angler! Those were the days!

Some Bass must still be there. Remember that only a small portion of the Rietvlei shoreline is open to the public and that fishing from a boat is not permitted (although there is a yacht club). Many years ago a buddy of mine (who shall remain nameless!) caught some beautiful Smallmouth near the wall at Rietvlei. This area is not open to the public. My guess is that one would catch some good Bass at Rietvlei if Bassing was allowed from boats, notwithstanding the pollution, etc ... Just look at the Bass coming out of the polluted Harties!

Now if someone would just stock Rietvlei with some Florida strain Bass ...
;)

:lol:1 Wish it was me - I have not yet managed to catch a Bass of that size in Gauteng!

I did catch my first Bass (close to 2kg) in 1972, though - in Roodeplaat Dam on an earthworm while fishing for Kurper ...

That's what started my obsession with Bass ... ;)
