{Don't have these reels available in the shops here so have to order online, just want to make sure I get the sizes right}

Thanks for the info Neps, some great fish on Mark's site. Have tried to contact him so hopefully something comes out of that. Great info all around.
Capiez - look forward to your trip report. HK has a couple of decent tackle shops if (comparable in price to tackledirect and a few other sites), so if you ever pop across the water they are here.. (on HK island, PoKee tackle and Triton tackle are pretty good and have a fair collection of jigging/popping stuff; on Kowloon side there is another Triton tackle branch and World Fishing Centre - don't be put off by the websites, people over here prefer physical shopping to online so the guys put no effort into websites)

Thanks iana, will keep that in mind if I don't come right here in Taiwan.

Some GT fishing of the east coast of Taiwan aswell. Have tried to find out about it, but my Chinese is terrible and absolutely no English on that side of the island. Duane and myself might try to organise a short trip locally just to try and break the GT virgin before we take on the monsters of Indonesia.

The Stella 18k is slightly bigger than the 6000 but more comparable in size to the 6500 dog fight. The Daiwa has a slightly better drag though at 65Lb where the Stella has 55Lb drag. Not that hanging onto 55Lb of drag would be easy...

Stellas and Saltiga are the best.
If you are not going often it's a big investment for little use. I have found Shimano Stradic great value for money and have all sizes from 2500 up. I use a Stradic 6000 on a Shimano 50-100lb jigging rod with 50lb braid and 200lb leader. It has never let me down. I spend lots on fishing but can't justify price difference between Stella and Stradic and prefer Shimano over Daiwa.

If you don't feel like having to arrange a meeting with your bank manager first, then look around for the Saltist 6500H, a Poseidon offshore 7' or 8' and some of your favourite braid. It's a really solid rig that has worked well for me. That way I was left with some money to do what really counts... getting to the best fishing grounds that money can buy.

was about to suggest bying the rod in Indonesia. They have a very good fishery there and well supported with good quality Malaysian and Indo made rods and reels. No question, you need Stella or Saltiga reels but you can buy a suitable popping rod there if you have time to search out the better local brands and stores. Other than China, most of the other world's rods are made there.
