Reel for Jigging and Popping

I know this question has been asked a million times over, but I need your opinions on the following reels for heavy jigging and popping on a R2000 budget:
Shimano Spheros
Penn Conquer
Penn Slammer
Quantum Cabo
FinNor Offshore
Okuma Salina II

Or any other reel you can recommend that falls into this bracket.

Depending what you popping for the Shimano Spheros would be the way to go out of these reels , you can get an extra 6 kg out of the drag with slight modification plus the stella bearings and handle fit it to upgrade it. Before the stella was popular in Australia this was there go to reel for big Samson fish . I have taken a few very big yellowfin on the quantum carbo 70 as well .

i don't mean to divert the thread; Tackle Whore, would you care to please share a bit more regarding the upgrades you refer to for the Spheros? - i have a few of them and my mates also use them. Perhaps rather reply in a new thread.

thanks RaggieH, for what its worth, i have Spheros in sizes 8000, 6000 & 5000. I have used them for some years on the fishingski; (pretty much every week, year-round) - kayak fishing is quite harsh on gear, and ive been impressed that they are solid, reliable and strong.

Hello Folks

I would wait for the new Saragosa SW. Tackle Direct already have them listed on their website. Pricing looks promising. The boys in Oman have tested the extensively on monster Geets. All points to another exciting product from Shimano.

great but at what price with the exchange rate ? And then agents still to decide if they will stock it will def only be next year Feb as it will be released for the trade show in August in south Africa , then pre order and wait for stock .

Pricing in the US puts it at the same price as the Stradic FJ which I believe to be very good. It is now also listed on the Shimano US site. Availability is SA will be anyone's guess although I am sure that they will be eager to get it into stock given the subdued sales of the bigger Stradics and Sustains due to the lower retrieve speeds.

Salina a good reel and holds up well in R&S. In fact most Okhuma reels challenge Shimano as top brand in USA and Australia but we have a very limited range in the RSA

Shimano's key advantage over the competitors is that this is 100% the key focus area, namely reels and the hold over R2.5m in spares to make sure you are sorted on the general maintenance of reels.

The only other brand remotely close to availability of spares on such a diversity of reels is Daiwa.

Ever tried to get spares for an Okhuma?

Personally when it comes to spending money on reliability and performance in a reel one will have to go a very long way to challenge the Quality / Durability and Service Support available form Shimano.

No I don't work for Shimano / I'm not sponsored by them but they have proven themselves over and over and over again.

I would however bite the bullet and spend R150-400 more and get the Saragosa which is a monster for what you are paying.

In fact I'd probably even buy a 18000 before buying the Bullseye for Surf Angling for big fish.

I got a 18000 saragosa for the heavy stuff and will be getting a 10000 for the medium work.

I've always been happy with all my Shimano's
