Recent trips to Kadavu (Fiji) and the Andaman Islands

Hi Guys

Quick report from Sydney from an ex Cape Town boy. I do a lot of jigging and popping out here and attached is a short run down of two recent trips I took.

The yellowtail jigging season is firing up here now with fish to 18kg coming off the deeper reefs (90-110m). Jigging them up is a bit different to trekking but almost as effective. As boys will, the challenge is now to get the big ones on lighter and lighter gear.....wich usually ensures a lighter jig wallet on the return journey.

Please feel free to gvie me a shout if you need any inside info on fishing in Oz or Sth Pacific.

I got that big grouper and a couple of GT's jigging but the majority on poppers, although to be fair I did a lot more popping than jigging. I got a spectacular bust-off on a jig in the Andamans - 14 kg drag (measured) with some extra palming but the fish just took me straight down into the bricks, skipper called it for a big doggie, but who knows?

Funny, I can't wait to get back Africa and fish Kilwa etc properly. The grass is always greener.......

At Kadavu we stayed at http://www.matava.com which is awesome. Only negative (for wives/gf's) is that there's no beach right at the resort, but a short kayak (or walk at low tide) you can get to a small island that has a nice one, as well as good snorkling. The rates here are very reasonable, especially for a dedicated group of 4 fisho's, A$1850 each for 7 nights all-in accomm and 5 boat days. The killer would be the flight from SA, JHB-SYD-Nandi-Kandavu - that would really blow out your costs. Fishing one-up also means $$$, but they do have a smaller boat that you can do shorter sessions quite easily. They get the trade winds from now until October/November which would mess you around, although they have an INTENSE wahoo/sailfish bite which is already hotting up. My next trip there will involve a secret sea mount 30 miles out that comes up out of 2000m to 120m. The idea being that you pin a small (10-15kg) yellowfin on approach and LIVEBAIT it for big blues. If no joy there then you jig the area for nasty ooglies - they got a 90kg doggie there recently.

The Andamans would be easier: JHB-SING-Kolkata/Chennai-Port Blair. Then you get a ferry to Havelock Island. As I said, this is a quite a backpacker/traveller vibe, but there is a nice range of places to stay. It's very dive-focussed but the boat we got was IR6000/day or 9000 for the bigger one. The Andamans is very seasonal though, Dec-April only. If you go with the guys at Gamefishing India out of Port Blair that's 400 Euro's for the small boat and 700 for the big one (takes 4). They also have a 'big fish' window in October, but you run the risk of getting blown out. My feeling is that you WILL take fish with them. Food and accomm in India are cheap.

Fantastic report Sakhumzi, I'm sure you realise just how jealous we all are!!!

There have been some awesome reports out off Kadavu recently, with a Fijian record Dogtooth of 90 kilos taken by Bill Busch fishing with Capt Adrian Watt, along with plenty of incredible GT's... definitely another place on the "Must visit" list...

Great report on the Andamans too.... apparently Darran runs a great operation and as you mentioned, the potential is incredible.... mid season reports of 30 GT's a day have come in, which is incredible!
