Morning Gents

I am thinking about going to fish in Poenskop.

1. Is it safe to go with a car or do I need a 4x4?

2. Where are the good grounds to fish near Poenskop?

Thanks for the help

Hi Riks,

I've just come back from PSJ about a week or so back.

I did see guys go up to Poenskop by car, I can tell you I wouldn't even attempt it, the road is bad, there is a river/lagoon you will have to cross, if your car is low, you'll be in trouble. I would strongly recommend a 4x4.

The road up to Poenskop after the river is scary as hell, almost a 45 degree incline at some places.

The bay to the far right of Poenskop is a good place to fish, but will require some walking. The bay to the left, near the beach is also good, very deep water or just off the front of the rocks is also deep.

Get there early, like pre-dawn and try for live bait in the bay to the left. Pinkies, shad or karro's are good bait. Or try an ocky leg for Kob if you go at night.

Hope that helps...

Nah, nothing decent to speak of, got my quota of shad at Mpame, that was it. None of the guys I was with caught anything at Poenskop apart from a shad or two.

Very strange cos all the conditions were right, down to barometric pressure, wind, the works... still no fish!

I have on numerous occasions seen cars at Poenskop. You dont need a 4x4 but a normal bakkie would do. The later part of the roads are a bit rocky so your car might get damaged. Poenskop normally produces some good sharks, did you fish for them or just for edibles?  Beware of the Parks Board at Poenskop, they are normally under cover, disguised as gillies.  Ensure you have your fishing license and keep to size and quantity limits.
