Ponta do Ouro offshore fishing advice and tips

Hi Guys, I'm on my way to Ponta Do Ouro for the Easter holidays and this will be the first time I'm fishing the area by boat. I'm still very new to the offshore fishing game and could really use a few pointers and advice for fishing the area. I've heard some guys say don't bother trying to get live bait because it's so hard to come by and just focus on trolling rapala's. Is that true? Some guys are saying target Atlantis, ponta ledge and Ponta Molangane ledge and others saying rather focus on 15 - 18m mark past the shallower reefs because there are less sharks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there. Where will you be staying? I am also going at the same time. Was there at malongane last year at Easter and got live bait on 10m and head to 20m. Cought nice cudas.

Just got back from Cape Vidal and rapalas worked very well, but we're not so lucky at Ponta last year. Maybe this year is different. Drift with dead baits also worked. Let me know if you need more help. Lukie

Just make sure you verify the restricted areas, as our the past few years MPAs has been established, and bans on certain types of fishing. I am sure if you ask Maritimo or some charter outfit they will give you the co-ords as where you can and cannot fish! Good luck and report back.

Hi LUKIE DP

We are staying in a self catering cottage which is somewhere between Ponta Do Ouro and Ponta Malagane. I will be sure to try the 10m - 20m marks for live bait, because it always seem to be the best way of catching. I will let you know how it goes. Good luck for your trip and tight lines.

Hi Serra Moz

Thanks for the heads up. when I was researching the MPA it said you are allowed fishing within the boundaries of the MPA, as long as you are not bottom fishing or vertical jigging. As I'm only going to be trolling and drifting for pelagic species, it's my interpretation of the MPA that I can fish within the 3NM which forms the boundary. Can anyone else maybe tell me if this is correct?

Yes, from way back past - that was my understanding. However I would suggest you speak to Maritimo or any lodge owner, charter outfit - do make sure about it. Good luck matey

doodles can be very productive with the smaller cuda. I've been going there for 15 years and it has always been my first stop. you can also get live bait there. It is easy to find, launch off ponta do oura and it will be the reef infested with people searching for live bait.
