Plett and Langebaan Flyfishing

Hi Everyone,

I am going to be in Plett this December and then from there to Langebaan/Kraalbaai(wherever we get a mooring,will have a rubberduck to get around).

It will be my first time flyfishing in SW,so armed with my 7Wt rod I want to try and tackle some of the smaller species ie:Blacktail,Karanteen,Grunter,Stompies (will get the bigger fish on more conventional ways)

Where would be some good places to start?
I was thinking for Plett I would try(havent been there in years so might be a bit off):
-Off and to the rocks of Beacon Isle,
-Going to Robberg and making my way around the mountain and stopping at all the fishable spots
-Arch rock,should be some places to fish from the shore and rocks
-Keurbooms, I dont have a boat so will have to find a spot where I can walk and find some Grunter( any ideas anyone ? )

And For Langebaan I have never been there,so I have no idea where to start? I will have a small boat to make my way around in so I can get pretty much anywhere in the lagoon.

Also,some idea of techniques and what flies to use will be much appreciated.

I know that the sandsharks at a Langebaan can be fun. Find them on the flats and get that fly down on the bottom right infront of them.
Personally I would rather swim around the world before i targeted grunter on fly. it just doesnt work. Try off the rocks with small worm/shrimp patterns with a thin tippet for the blacktail and stumpies. I would still take a look at the Keurbooms, there can be some nice leeries in there that will give you a good pull on your 7wt. Most of my friends fish 7wts for leeries, but I still feel more comfortable when it is really windy with my 9wt. Just try to fight the fish off the reel and not put the full weight of the fish on your rod!

Hi the Keurbooms is normally productive for Shad and Juvenile leeries as well as the occasional Grunter (right fly and a lotta luck!). The Keurbooms/Bitou split is the best place and because you don't have a boat there are good places to fish the split as well as down the Bitou from the side. Drive down the N2 towards angling club and go into Twin Palms gate on right before the club, tell security that you are going to fish. I think the only negative is that you have to be out before 6pm. There are Springer down the Bitou although I have yet to catch one. As Konrad said, use your 9wt as there are some bigger Kob and Grunter that hang around there. Intermediate line is good for Leeries/Shad to avoid weed etc on surface and baitfish/squid and prawn imitating flies work. Tight lines!

Great advice,Sounds like I will have to beg/borrow/steel a 9wt for December.

I will do that,are there any specific fly patterns I should get as a "beginners kit"?

Some brown/tan crazy charlies with a bit of flash, some pink epoxy prawn/shrimp, some pink and white squid, some white poppers and some deer hair woolly mullet and some chartreuse/white clouser minnows. This is a good start as far as flies go. Don't be intimidated by fly names just go into a good fishing shop that sells flies and ask. oh ja and get some 10-12lb fluorocarbon for your leaders.Good luck and most of all enjoy!

I dont flyfish anymore.use to.only rock surf.my brother who lives in uk now when comes down loves plett.he and his mates fly fanatics.i asked some advice to post.reckons nov or febr march great less pressure.keurbooms bitou split good and higher up in keurbooms.9 weight orvis and scientific anglers system 2 reel .9 weight wf alrounder floating or intermid line.make own leaders that taper down maxima ultragreen.same for shock tippet.beaut spotted grunter kobs leeries and skippies.they caught some trophy fish.i will post some fly patterns i downloaded as examples.hope little info help.good stripping basket a must and fighting but.shooting heads when gale winds blow.200 m backing.leaders of 2.5 to 3 m.tigers or grunter clear leader.loop knot for movement of fly.

Epoxy flies.take my hat of to doug.my brother ties his own flies but tells me no one can ever beat doug.way back my brother was taught by uncle dave alcock to fly fish and my brothers role model when it comes to fly fishing and creating saltwater patterns definitely is doug swannell.good fishing guys enjoy holiday and awesome fly fishing!
