GT i'm not looking to stir, truely tried to help here, thought you wanted to use them to get rid of some more barbel.
I've even gone so far as to mail DEAT to try and get the information cause trying to get it off their website is impossible, and the question of frogs has come up before.

My reply to the platties post was not meant as an attack at you or to stir in any way or form. This thread is about platties and the use thereof for fishing. I merely stated using them as such would be illegal, by you or anyone else in the Western Cape as far as i know. Glad to know you are up to speed with fishing laws, not everyone might be. You intend to merely have them swimming around your dam, so then it doesnt pertain to you...
About barbel and at a risk to hijacking this thread. I find the idea or rather the request you once made that people should please kill any barbel they catch as they destroy the bass population IDIOTIC.
How can any person in their right mind ask that a fish endemic to South Africa be killed off as they are a threat to an introduced alien species of fish???
Barbel are NOT endemic to the Western Cape, but they are definately more endemic than bass. Plus, and i've stated this before... a yellowfish has through evolution even if it's clanwilliam yellows, learnt to evade barbel as a predator. Their sudden population crashes is a direct result of bass populations in these rivers due to unscrupelous fishermen either introducing this fish species to these river systems, and/or even worse idiots having bass estates that during flooding introduces large amounts of these fish to systems.
A yellowfish in particular has never evolved to evade a fish that can be almost the same length as him, swim faster than him, and attack him.
Our rivers in general are in a horrible state and at present there is very little we can do about it and the polution.
If removing bass and trout from these systems and forcing people to stop breeding them if they cannot control the spread of these fish, e.g. only allowing sterile fish to be kept, improves the survival rate of yellowfish and other heavily threatened species by only 0.5%, i support it 10000%
