Saw on the 7 o'clock news tonight how Zuma publicly anounced the ban lifted in the overberg area ( Hermanus side ). If anyone has any more info as to size & bag limits, restricted areas, please share.
my first call at 8 will be to MCM ... :sc:::

I think that recreational catches would still be closed. There was no ban on commercial fishing.

They simply suspended the fishery. It might seem technical but it is an important distinction.

There are still rights holders and a TAC etc.

I wouldn't break out the meat mallet to start tenderising yourself some perlie steaks just yet!

no matter how you tenderise it, a night behind bars leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

not MCM or DEAT have any information regarding this matter. After many phone calls I now finaly have gotten the attention of one of the officials Who have "prommised" a reply with some information within next week..
So far no word has been handed down by the minister just yet..
Apparently the details are to be announced early next year.
But will keep them hot & you updated with any new info..

eish..

Could this be another empty promise cause what i dont understand is how can something like this happen even without deat knowing about it surely they are the ones that regulate these sort of things, i can see this becoming a very big issue as to when who and how and where things are to happen IF IT DOES EVER HAPPEN

"Perlemoen ban lifted

A two-year ban of perlemoen (abalone) fishing has been lifted by the South African Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. This follows the transfer of the fisheries sector from the department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism soon after President Jacob Zuma came into office, when he announced that fishing was an economic activity and not an environmental issue. Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry minister Tina Joemat-Petterssen said the ban was not working and poaching remained out of control. “We lift the ban conditionally,” she said."

Okay here is another article i found in the Ports and Ships Maritime News and as i understand it this is not an ENVIROMENTAL issue so to me MCM and DEAT have no say in this and its the Dept of Agriculture ,Fisheries and Forestry that is in charge and they are the ones that will be regulating it so i am not to sure what now
Who is going to inspect these catches if it happens?
Boy this is going to be interesting

At the end of the day it is a political issue..

The National Gov. needs to score some points with the locals after defeat at the voting stations earlier this year. One way of getting a load of votes is to re-open the perlemoen season. Puts $ in the pockets of people who live in towns like Hawston, and the National Governerning Party back on the map in the western cape.

and all this time the poor perlies are the ones suffering.

Well thats my opinion... And yes i am sure it will get censored because it does not conform with the Politics policy of Sealine, but lets face the facts. Mr Shower head goes to hawston, and suddenly they are looking at suspending the ban... who do you think just scored some serious votes....

Tina Joemat-Petterssen is correct with her assessment that the ban is / was not working.

Maybe the next strategy is open it for a free for all and allow the species to simply be wiped out completely... saves the gov. time and money policing a resource they don’t really care about and will silence the recreational as well as the bunny hugger groups in one fell swoop...

bloody marvellous... :doh

The chances the recreational abalone ban being lifted are close to zero , but what could result from this is a lift of the dive ban areas as there will now be comercial divers in the dive ban areas anyway This defeats the purpose of what they were created for. It is well acepted that they were a waste of time and only helped the poachers .Not that they were policed anyway but it would be nice to have them legal.

cheers

There's less Perlemoen now than there were when they banned the recreational folks :( silly! I think us being there...taking our 3..put the poachers more in the eyes when trying to take out..
