Ekskuus Oom, I thought I was the oldest....LOL

Just for interest sake, I also remember these as red reels, just because my Dad had one and I also have a negative perception of the darn thing.

Yet, till today, they are probably the most popular reels in the US, must have something very good inside!   Still lots sold every day.

Hi Reefman,

It's ok. I was looking at buying 2 of them but they are 2 far gone to resurrect.
Found them on Gumtree.

I was buying but have decided to rather buy either another Penn 555GS, or Shimano Torium 30.

Hey bru, how can you mention those 2 reels in the same breath?! IMO, the Penn, even though it is a good reel, isn't in the same class as the Torium.

But watch the Penn guys come down on me now.... just watch. Especially okes like Raggieman...

After a long day of fishing off the Florida Coast testing products, a Penn Engineer and Penn’s CEO were engaged in conversation. For years, reel companies mimicked Otto Henze’s original patent of using a bridgeplate to mount the gear stud and main gear. At the time this was innovation and creativity at its finest. However, with the great advances in materials and machining capabilities, the question was posed, why were companies using decade old technology when a better, stronger, and more reliable design could be used? A new, revolutionary concept was quickly sketched on the back of a napkin and a new Patent was born. From this innovative and revolutionary patent, Penn is proud to introduce a truly unique reel design, an Integrated Side Plate. This integrated Side Plate (ISP) serves as the basis for a new series of reels which is introduced over the next few pages. But before its introduction, a bit more discussion of the Integrated Side Plate design is warranted.

They were advertised in the ESA mag, wonder how they cast, in the States they are priced cheaper than the Trinidads. They might just cause a shake up in the Japanese dominated SA Market, see it has the same freespooling disengaging pinion by the looks of it as a Grandwave?

I stand corrected, but don't think these reels are made in the US.   A merge/takeover took place between Penn & Okuma a while ago.http://www.okumafishingteam.com/  Okuma probably wanted a good brand name.:(

Nevertheless, the Pen 525 mag reel is one of the most popular amongst distance casters and this one probably has the same pinion system, which is indeed similar to the Diawa X wave series.

They are generally a bit small for our (my) purpose but I would think very good reels nevertheless.

I don't like the lack of flange for my thumb!!!
