PE Prosecutions

Exert from an email from our local fishing enforcement.

The following prosecutions were instituted: (1/04/2007 - 31 July 2007)
- Fishing with out permit, Swartkops, 58 fines to the value of R14 500;
- Fishing of under size fish, Swartkops and New Brighton Peer, 7 fines to the value of R6 100;
- Fishing with out permit, Marine Drive, Cape Recife, etc., 15 fines value at R4 750;
- Fishing in a Marine protected Area, Sardinia Bay, 1 fine at R1 500.


They have 7 officers so that works out to 2.89 prosecutions per officer per month.

They should incentivise it. Tell them they can keep 10% of their totals every month!!Then watch that workrate.,..........

the problem with incentivise is then they become over zealous and look for reasons to prosecute

more prosecutions more money which may not be a bad thing

Ya, I agree.

And also they will target 'easy' violations and ignore those that are more difficult to access or those that pose a threat to them, which is where the problem pedominantly lies.

Interesting, they have an Honorary Marine Conservation Officer's accreditation, which is a trained voluntary position...
