Over the last few days I’ve had the pleasure of taking Sergy fishing first an afternoon session off Dubai and then a day in the Musandam . Dubai has been Firing recently as the Queenfish are back with a vengeance in 2 days charters we’ve landed probably 50 queenies on light tackle over two 4 hour sessions. Fishing from Jebel Ali is a pleasure as you either sneak out in the morning or the afternoon and can be back at work before the boss realises you’re gone! Casting surface lures to moggy queen fish rates as one of the best light tackle experiences you can get in my books and the surface take and often aerial displays these hard fighting fish give you is always a blast, its also a great way to get your kids hooked on fishing as was proved by Sergy’s son who landed a number of Queenfish from the front of the boat.
What I was most looking forward to was the Musandam trip I last fished here in February and I had some great fish back then so I was keen to see what the warmer water would bring. Damon has had some excellent fish out over the last few week and had been telling me about the big fish that had been smashing up the guys on a regular basis!
Sergy opened the account with a Monster Queenfish which we towed off the shallows and got all work up about as we thought we had our first GT after a bit of teasing we let him go and set up the drift again. Sergy got the ball rolling again with a big hit but as we were backing up the fish came off Jon “Coutaman†Viney spied a silvery flash off the side of the boat and cast out his Siren Stick bait and bang a big Kingfish was all over it going airborne five feet from the boat a short fight later we had it on the boat for photo’s before releasing it into the hatch for dinner later on. Not long after Sergy again went tight this time with a greater Barracuta which carefully lip gaffed and released.
I was next on the board I’d recently bought a few of the Hammer Head I-cups from the shop and I’d been dying to test them out they can be a bit off a mission to cast at first but I was soon in the swing off things and getting them out a good distance I went tight on a fluoro pink number with a kingfish half the size of Jons much to his delight!
With the current beginning to push nicely we decided to change spots which was the best decision of the day as on the first drift Sergy’s son went tight during a pack attack of big fish we got the fish into deeper water just in time as it began to drill it’s way to the bottom of the ocean with sergy’s son hanging on for dear life, he fought the fish for about 10 minutes but had to admit defeat with the fish still a good 70m meters out Sergy stepped in to show his son how it was done and promptly had his ass whipped as well! We eventually got the fish on the boat it measured a solid 132cm a beast of a fish to deal with in the currents of the Musandam and the biggest fish of the season so far.
On the next drift we had a double up but only Jon managed to hang onto his fish boating another Geet of 120cm on his Hot’s 77xh we had a few more drifts thereafter but we were humbled by the fish getting smashed up another 4 times I was given the biggest beat down I’ve ever had by a fish in Musandam when my Gamma was chowed and the fish took off like it had eaten a double serving of Nando’s extra hot it was all I could do to hang onto my Race Point 200 with the line pouring off my Stella and my glove about to ignite from friction as I palmed the reel it was a mixture of relief and anger as the lure pulled free, got my Gamma back but lost the biggest Geet I’ve ever hooked in the Musandam win some lose some!
