'other' power swivels on slides

Hi Guys.

I have seen that most slides these days have these swivels on. Why do people use them? are they not weaker than the proper power swivels? with the price of some slides these days they should have the best swivels possible surely?

I could be wrong and they could be the strongest swivels arouls but i have poped them before and have seen a few brake so im pretty sure that they arent as strong...

does anyone feel comfortable using them and does anyone know the braking strain of them?

Are you comparing these to the ball bearing versions. If so surprisingly these power swivels are significantly stronger than the ball bearing versions size for size. There is a chart at a local tackleshop that shows that they are almost twice as strong by size!

I've also noticed this with slides, the normal kinfisher slides have proper power swivels on them but now this is what gets me....the heavy duty 2mm spring steel slides you buy seperately for like R15-00 each have fake power swivels on them??? doesnt make sense... heavy duty and then put a sh!t swivel on it?? ( most people dont notice this but if you compare you will notice a definate difference ) these swivels are crap and brake much easier than "power swivels" - the origional ones that say power swivel on the packet and come from japan!!!

this is what i do with those swivels ( cant call them Power swivels!!! ) I take/ cut the thing off the slide , take a strong jigging split ring ( 300lb) and put it on then put a proper power swivel on!!! Problem solved!!

Do what we did.

Order 500 slides from one of ourr Sealine mates with the proper power swiwel and bead and 1/2 oz weight in for R10 each and then you know you are sorted for a while.

We are a group that ordered it. At 500 you get them at a good price and he pays the shipping to us.

Now I know that I musrt check those old KF slides of mine for the swiwels

Those swivels are what are called rolling swivels and not the Japanese power swivels

They are stronger than barrel swivels if you get the right brands and will probably be around 25kg breaking strain but inferior ones pull out or the ring pulls and the wire snaps the ring

If i use heavy cable and thick windon on the rocks and I'm going to land the fish using the windon I bypass the swivel all together and tie it directly to the heavy steel ring on the slide. (with that i don't even trust a #1 power swivel and have as much or as little tangling of the slide trace with or without the swivel

I swing my connection around. Tie the leader to the ring and the swivel end to the sinker traces. This ensures that you will not have a swivel failing on you.

Arno, what Steve and I are on about is that these sub-standard swivels are on the slide not on the ring, we tie our leader with thimbles to the slide ring.

Many of us cut the swivel off the slide and tie heavy wire traces straight to the slide and not the swivel.

Doesn't tangle with 440lbs and you can use your windon and trace instead of a gaff to land the big fish

Hi Steve M, here is some info off the kingfisher website, i think this should answer some questions regarding these swivels

The one in your picture i believe is the rolling swivel...

Rolling Swivels
Sizes available:
4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Rolling Swivels are smaller in size than the equivalent size barrel swivel and 20% stronger
  • Brass Blacked [/*]
  • Packed 10 pieces per poly bag [/*]
  • 10 poly bags per box
[/*]

Power Swivels
Sizes available:
2/0, 1/0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10
  • Packed 10 pieces per poly bag [/*]
  • 10 poly bags per box
This product is a rolling type swivel of brass body and stainless steel wire. The stainless steel wire makes the Power Swivel about 2 times as strong as the relevant sizes of Rolling type swivels. Considerably stonger and smaller. [/*]

Thanks for that tip Enigma. Will take that into account.

Ditto.. Thanks Enigma... I just learnt something new again, going to reinspect all my slides tonight

@Enigma - You said you are tieing your windons straight onto the stopper ring... What about in the case of Raggies that are known to turn and bite... would it not be advisable to still have a piece of steele above the stopper ring so as to prevent a bite back from a raggie

Arno did you hear about the first lot that was posted?, 2 rods and slides went the wrong way!! Rods are lost.

Guys as enigma has pointed out they are called, rolling swivels, the so called power swivel is also a rolling swivel but the arms or rings are made of stainless steel, i use these on my slides or the excellent 2/0 rolling swivel by lion tackle, top quality and breaks at the same strain as the no.1 power swivel ( tested) by anglers not agents.

The sub-standards are around and i have even addressed it with the agent that sells them, they are made in China and believe me they still sell millions of them, so unfortuantely they will still be around.

Just like other things that we all tend to complain about we will still pay R1500 more for a rod  that meets your quality, why not pay R5 or in my case R5 less for better quality swivels on your slides???

Makes one thing doesnt it???

Khan.

Your slides are great. Just a pity of the mix up and the slides taht went to the incorect place and the rods that disapeared.
