Ok guys this is not about what baits r better or not
And no slating or bunny hugging just debate ok !!

Right I've used many diff types of bait for sliding or throwing
The deal is I can't bring myself to chop a little hammer or grey or bronzie for bait
Am I soft ? I don't mind a sandy a smoothie a dorrie

Another livies thing shad cool mullet blacktail stripy but piggy no way

How do u guys feel on the subject
Ok if u hook the little chap badly and he's not going to make it then its fair game
I just love seeing my released fish swim away

Hi Boepens, good subject.

I see it live this, If you use a hammer, grey exct. for swim bait it most probably would have been chomped it any way swim bait or not. I will not chop a hammer or grey for bait only a smoothy and that will be one in 3-4 months depending on how much you fish and how many people use of it. Sandys I don't show mercy for. One chopped on a day pushing two depending on fish conditions...:fbash

Then their is no bait like fresh bait, One black tail or so a day, shad depends on size. If in size I will chop a decent head and keep the rest for supper, same with cob.

A no no for me will be steenies, baardman, piggy exct.
My do's Blacktail, Zebra, streepies...Shad head if size sometimes will use a hole one depending on size nothing under 25cm and very seldom as I do not target these fish. Cob will only be in size and head only.

The rest of my bait I buy, Y-tail, frigget, mackies, sardies, chocka. Oh and occie I get live but only in winter or when I need them, Else they can stay.

I always feel bad after chopping a fish, but at least I do not do this on a frequent basis. Some guys will do this every single time they go fishing. Such a waste of bait.

i think its a moral issue what you're prepared to stick a massive hook through or not.

like that pic i posted of a baby cob the other day.......caught a whole bunch of them looking to get a livey but couldn't bare the thought of puutting a hook through any of them so i released them all.

so ya....i think you're soft dude, just like me and hundreds of others....lol :fswim

Not soft, I think it's more to do with values. I think about future of fishing stock. I will use fish that is all over but not scares ones. Would any one use a gallie or cracker for bait? NO! So why should other fish be used that is a joy to catch. Blacktail and other little fish is full up and I do release allot of them. I do not use allot of livies as I do not fish for them!

just for record: as this was an issue previously, all live bait has to of minumum legal size...

When i fish and there is plenty small sharkies, I will chop one and use the whole fish as bait, fillets head ect. Nothing goes to waste, but wont just chop a head of a decent fish and chuck the body.

Took me a while to do this.

Apparently the bronzies on the west coast love them. Saw a rigged gallie somewhere on sealine a while ago.

Sorry for me that is just to much. Will never do that. Before I was educated I would have done it but not now.

@ Kopstamp. Yes it has to be legal min size. Like I said if in size I will chop head and keep rest for supper. Shad I do cheat with. Sorry shoot me for that. This year I used three under sized shad for bait.:fbash

I ate the rest though

yes will use a head any day if the fish was in size. I got a baardman the other day, under size but it would not have made it. Me and my stupid 2hook setups! It swallowed both hooks and I killed it by removing the hooks:-( Ate the fish was damn nice and used the head as bait.

Boep I don't Think It's that you're soft , i just Think it shows your human , As Mark says , once educated , or giving half a damn about anything else excepting oneself , you start to obviously share a little bit of passion for certain animals .Smoothies i can hack em , but if they're big - No Way .

I was with a certain Member , once , off to robberg point .
i Watched them hook a Fairly decent sized smooth hound , And upon landing it , chp it's head off , throwing the body to One side . i Walked up to it , And filmed It's still-beating heart on my camera phone . I Asked if i could fillet it - i Mean- It's Not like i could kill it twice Now , could I , and i hate seeing Bait go to Waste .

but the casual Manner in Which a fairly Large hound's head was Lobbed Off , then have the carcass tossed aside . Eish . Then I'm a softie too .

Hammers if They're smallish - yes
Big Bronzies - No
Grunter- eish - you shoulda Seen my face when we went on the breede , hunting Nyami Nyami , and i had to hook a Live grunter for bait ........:(

In general Though , i rarely use Live Bait . And kill as Little As i can . use EVERYTHING on the thing i kill .

Ok so Mark, thats 4 undersize fish in total? Lol. And sayin that you wouldve done things like using a gallie for bait 'before you were educated'. Now, I often use gallie for bait, coz I dnt eat them, so the 2 or 3 fish I keep a season go back on a slide. As for your belman, the 'educated' thing to do, wouldv been cutting the hooks and left them instead of removing them and causing further damage. I release all undersize fish, no matter how badly hurt they are, and let nature decide its fate. As for swimming baits, hells yes ill do it. But theres a time and place, namely the trankei! Lol. Smoothies are a favourite bait of mine, and I have a spot where I can catch in excess of 10 in a few hours, all in the 2kg range. Ill use one for bait now and again. Sandies are open season tho. But again dont like the big ones. I dont and wont swim a flatfish or a rag. But thats my personal pref. I got no beaf with the guys that do.

@ Def, barble is a highly rated bait in Namibia. Dead bait tho. Think spyker does a demo on how to make a baber bait.
