As expect you realise the static mag you have is stronger than the knobby and may well be too strong. Try adding a thin extra magnet to the top of the one on the knobby (they are cheap on Ebay)or use a thicker oil in the bearings. This should fix it.

As expect you realise the static mag you have is stronger than the knobby and may well be too strong. Try adding a thin extra magnet to the top of the one on the knobby (they are cheap on Ebay)or use a thicker oil in the bearings. This should fix it.

As you will see from the many pics of different models of the MAG-IT Magnetic Cast Control System, it is fully adjustable, by sliding the magnets inwards for higher and outwards for slower max spool speed.
In fact, the system is not actually "static" and I rather consider it to be a "hybrid", as you can adjust it from too slow, to too fast and everything in between, by moving the magnet(s) position and by adding or taking away magnet(s).
Some models like the Shimano Talica II, comes with a combination of thicker and thinner magnets, to make the system versatile and cater for a very wide range of different settings, covering all bases !

Thank you for the offer: I have been using magged reels for a long while now so do know how they work (both static and knobby types by the way).
As to what constitutes a "static mag" the accepted definition around the world of a static mag in a reel is one which can't be adjusted without taking the reel apart.
So if you want to change the setting on the beach for some reason then the knobby is easier.
Doesn't really matter which one you use as, if set up properly, they should both cast exactly the same distance.

as a project i decided to try my hands at magging my talica 50 myself. i will ask cuban to make me a proper mag plate. cutting stainless steel with a blikskêr and holesaw and then sanding is not the easiest task and not very neat. i made some videos of the results to give an indication of the tunability of his system. so here goes:

with some tuning i get the same result with the three mag stacks as with the one mag stack on the outside. about 15 sec spin time. as you can see the system cuban designed is not static. all of the tests and vids were done without replacing the screws and yook me about 10 minutes.

On a big heavy spool like that reel,I would guess that the 10 second spin time would be most ideal to cast if compared to the faster ones.Type of oil in bearings and line capacity, as well as diameter of line will all play a role in the eventual ease of casting of the reel.

biggest problem is stopping the spool when the weight hits water. second is stretching your gripping hand around the spool. really not comfortable. yes ten seconds or less. this will never be a regular casting reel. its got to much angular momentum that if you touch the line during a cast it burns you. so rather over mag it a bit. you can not brake it on the spool rim because it is moved onder the frame in free spool. will mostly use it with kite and swimbait. should be able to flick a big bait under a balloon some distance into a favourable current.
i do manage 80 to 90 meters with 8 to 10 oz with 0.75 main line. might be usable at some deepwater points.
i really love these talicas.
