Not the Monster GT I was after, but still a pretty entertaining tussle seeing as I got hit about 5 metres off the rod tip whilst popping off a sandspit in the surf at last light...

He ate a Cubera 150 in Purple.... same popper that got Greg ( noweeds ) big Cuda that was on the cover of Rock Surf and Deep a few issues back... seems to be a favourite not only with the GT's of the world, but the Cuda too...

Cheers for the comments boys...

Cracker - Yip, on the Ripplefisher 79H.... insane rod...

Franz - Was up in the Sao Sebastien peninsula, camping on a deserted sand spit last week...

Pat - Hahaha... could be Maccassar I guess:) Actually very little damage to the popper, what looks like damage is just sand on the lure.. I'll shoot a pic of the popper when I unpack tonight ( I've got ALOT of tackle that needs serious cleaning after 5 days on a deserted sandspit with no fresh water!!!! )

Nice one Dre! Spending more time in Moz than CPT these days! Love it! That 40 + GT is around the corner bro!

Is it just a weird angle or was the hook almost straightened? 1st and 3rd pic!

You back? if so, I'm in your hood next week. would be good to catch up over a beer and introduce you to little Marshie!

Marshie - Ha, mate I don't spend nearly enough time in Moz bro!!! :)

Stoked you'll be here next week with the little guy man, DEFINITELY hook up bro, just let me know when you gonna be here!

Regarding the hook... if you check the middle pic, you can see the hook properly, the 1st and 3rd pics, the hook point is actually not visibile, that black line that looks like the hook opened, is actually just a tear in the Cuda's jaw.... I also did a double take when I saw the pics...

Lekker man, let me know when you gonna be here!

Hi Andre ,

You have got " Maccassar " in South Africa ? We have Makkasar in South Celebes - Indonesia too .

By the way , on the first and last photos , that single tail hook is almost straighthened or is it an optical illusion because in the second photo , the tail hook is still OK .

Hi Jon,

Fantastic to have you hear Jon!!! Thanks for joining us!!
Yeah we do have a Maccassar here in Cape Town, in False Bay, its a big Shark Fishing spot!!!

Yes I noticed the hook looks straightenied, but as explained to Marshie above, its actually a tear in the Cuda's lip not the hook itself you can see in pics 1 and 3.... :)

How's fishing on your end Jon? I know Anthony is going to be in Cape Town in December, looking forward to meeting up with him.

ANy new Fresh Water adventures from your end? Always love to hear about those crazy trips of yours!!

Hope you're well,

Cheers
Andre

Jon you will be interested to know that "our" Macassar is in fact named after "your" Makassar thanks to our distant forefathers who hailed from Malaysia and Indonesia and sadly ended up as slaves in Cape Town about 400 years ago. I was in South Sulawesi (and Makassar) last year and not only are Indonesians among the most friendly people in the world, but your FOOD IS THE BEST ON THE PLANET!!

Hi Andre ,

Anthony Dillion has just completed a 3 day trip to North Sumba , he should be posting the report this weekend , the biggest GT of the trip is a 40 kg speciment with a few broken lines .

Makkasar in Indonesia is the origin of Bugis tribe , more well known as The Sea Gypsies who are found in Souther Thailand , Singapore , Malaysia ( East n West ) and all over the coastal of Indonesian archipelago .

We are having La Nina weather pattern in this area , the rain hasn't stop since last year and it looks as though the season will just continue till next year , I certainly hope so .  Further we have had some natural disasters , flash flood in Papua province followed by Merapi volcanic eruption ( still going ) and undersea earth quake in Mentawai Islands group which caused a tsunami , in total almost 600 fatalities , to date .

In 2005 we had a fantastic YFT season after the big tsunami which killed thousands in several countries , I hope this smaller tsunami will bring the YFTs into the bay again !:wfish

Hi Will ,

Thanks for the compliment , we do have good foods but also some really fantastic fishing spots , many do not realise how big Indonesia is ; 6 hrs non stop flight from the western most tip to the border with New Guinea and 3 hrs non stop flight between the southern of Java coast to the border with East Malaysia .

I was told the Makkasan area in Bangkok was the place of the Bugis tribe when they ended up in Thailand .

Next time you return to Makkasar , you should try fishing in the Makkasar strait , jigging spots are very good and popping spots are still producing good catches albeit there are better popping spots elsewhere .:fishn
