Newcomer

Hi All

I am a newcommer and need some advice.

My question is basicly about the what, when, how and why of using dry flies, wet flies, floating lines or sinking lines. I find that most books and information in this regard is so confusing because of the mass of info out there. I need a simple, but effective description of when to use what and why.

Eg:

When is the best time to use floating line or sinking line? When to use dry fly or wet fly? Are dry flies always used with floating lines and wet flies with sinking lines?

Can anybody give me a short list of the most common and effective wet and dry flies available for stillwater please? I fish for trout in stocked dams most of the time.

Any info like the above will be appreciated.

Hi Dryfly and Welcome to Sealine.

Alot of good questions there but unfortunately there are no real hard and fast rules - conditions and circumstances will dictate much of what to use and when. You are welcome to join me in the next 2 weeks or so and I will willingly share some thoughts. PM me your details if interested.

It's really impossible to answer your post sensibly - the subject is just too wide. Get yourself Dean Riphagen's books on Flyfishing in South Africa & Stillwater Trout Fishing. They're excellent guides to putting you on the right track.
