NEW TO DROPSHOTTING

All the rage in Dropshot now are these.... Pearl white flukes
And there you have it LGF...
These little jobbies need to be played with extensively before one learns how they work... different retrieves, speeds, water colours etc etc Starting with 1/8 oz jigheads up to 1/2 oz jigheads... Different strokes for different folks...
Thats what makes Dropshot fishing really interesting, 'cos its all about imagination... and the kids love it too...
One thing though that I'm not happy with in your setup... the 8' rod is too big bru. 6 and 7' are the way to go. 8' is bordering on "light tackle" whereas 6 and 7 are def ultra light??? Any way you can change it?
Oh and one LAST thing... it's actually so cool to talk fishing with you!

Reefman I was suggesting that to save up on cost.It is a big annoying for somebody to spend money on a whole reel of fireline, just to decide dropshotting is not for them.
I agree with you on all the plastics except a few 2 inch charteuse shads are nice for small kingies and the likes. On the rod I was going to say it was a bit long, but since you already bought it I didn't what to dishearten you, between 6 and 7 foot is ideal.
Other than that I think Reefman has covered everthing for you.

So you would agree with me that ideally we wouldn't use nylon on a dropshot reel; besides the fluoro leader?
Question for you... what do you do about line tension/spin? After 30 casts, the line tends to jump off the reel like an overwind... do you solve the problem with a proper swivel, or what? Any suggestions?

Reason for me asking is I know and experiment with most if not all the bass rigs, but I know from experience that the dam with the continuous big waves and seemingly blue water is a completely different thing, so the rigs for these various baits should differ to that of the bass ones. Now does this dvd show you how to rig these baits.
And then lastly, thanks for sending me off to the tackle shops again, now after I've bought these lures (at the least these, probably an entire new lures selection for saltwater/dropshot, knowing myself) I'm sure to have more lures than Loams..
Oh and just for old time sake

LGF, pop over to Solly's in Waterglen. They have some great stock at present. My previous favourite was the Gulp 3" Pearl minnow.......until I picked up some Powerbait 3" Galaxia green minnow! The same in pink lemonade also gave good results. I recently picked up some 1.5" (?) sensation baby bass plastics that also worked well. Another fantastic innovation to look for at Solly's are the Owner snagless swimming jigs! They are basically bass-style weedless hooks with a wobble-shaped head on. We used them amongst the rocks with the above-mentioned lures to great effect. With regard to using heavy leaders: I almost exclusively use 8 and 10lb Fireline attached to 10 and 14lb Flouro and have not lost anything other than shad! I have found the large knots created with leader more than 14lb hampers casting. Rather put on a foot or two of 20 / 30lb flouro on the end of the leader if you are worried about chafing from scutes or gill plates / rakers obviously making sure that the knot hangs off the tip before casting.
Doing that Dropshot trace on the beach is quite a mission... so I second what Dinglewolly says...
Yep, for ease of casting, keep the Fluoro leader to the minimum... and the swivel can be done away with.
Tie a Spider Hitch in the Fireline, use the Yucatan knot (on this site FAQ) to tie the Fireline to the leader. Quick and easy tiny knot.. 2c

Oh ja, I haven't found any use for a swivel using jigs as they are inherently stable.

Yeah, I've bought some serious dropshot gear and lures etc, and will still need to buy some 1/4 and 1/8 oz jigheads/leadheads with the 2/0 hooks, I've bought just about every lure that Reefer advised including the ones the guys used in the dropshot for kingies "INWATER" dvd, the only one's I couldn't get so far was the pink sandworms.

) thanx bud, been to solly's quite a few times and did buy some stuff from there, actually most of the Reefer's Advised lures, will check for the one's you recommend later this week.... Is there a specific brand of leadheads you would recommend.
BTW, my fluro leader tied to the braid is 1m in length and I've practised the double uni knot and got that down to an art, now it's just the other know that I need to get done....
