NEW TO DROPSHOTTING

Hey Guys:sos:

 

Im eager to learn drop shotting and am going to purchase a drop shot rod & reel, however i am not familiar with the different types of baits/worms/jigs used. I do watch ESA and see that certain worms and lures work all round. Please could you guys help me out with what to purchase with regards to size of the hooks/jigheads and baits that work best:help

hi well one way to start is to know what you going to target i am sure you have seen there is a large range of baits, sizes and colours.
the camo worm and the blood worm work well off rocks or into calm shore brakers. you can pick up alot of different species from blacktails, stumpies, wave garick and even bartail flatheads if the water is dirty.
the minnows are more for your game fish but because they are sented alot of your normal bait eating fish go for them to.
if there are shad around rather put on a spoon as they will rip these soft baits apart.
the weight of the jig head depends on the size of your lure i use 1/8 oz for worm and 1/4 for 4" minnows.
use a floro carban leader of about 1m in clear water in dirty water it does not make to much of a difference.
fireline is nice to use as it has a very direct feel with your jig but it costs alot so normal line works to.

i have mostly fished in gullies and lagoons in the transkie but have had a lot of luck in mozam on some of those shallow reefs.

mbotyi is a lovly spot in the lagoon or off the rocks by the mouth got a 1.5kg stenbraas there and a 2kg blacktail at flat rocks lots of fun on light tackle.

I got some Siglon florocarbon and it works well hey. Alot cheaper than fireline if you on a bit of a budget. The camo worm and the blood worm are some of the best to use when fishing gullys. You can just break it in half and use half of it. Have also found that the 2" (i think) swimming grub camo is also good for the gullys. The smaller the jig head the better but here weather and water conditions play a big part. rather have a selection of jigheads just in case.

Did some reading posts here and saw that (somewhere, don't ask?) that I should look at the Sensation Passion Stick for dropshotting.   So on Friday, I found myself in a tackle shop and walked out with following rod Sensation Passion Stick, spinning, 8" long, medium/fast action, two piece, which came in at R470-00 yes ladies and gents Gauteng prices, but who cares!!!!

Anyhows, the question remains as to what coffee grinder would be best, I'm thinking of strapping my Quantum HL30 (30 has the bigger spool allowing for more line than the 20) to it.  Also thinking of winding some fireline on before and filling it with fluro or mono, an dthen attaching a leader.  But is this the right way to go?

Also been trying to get the Berkley Sandworms in Camo colour and actually don't know what the bloodworm pattern (that all says is working) looks like.

I'll read up on the rigs a little later but for now, the reel and the line is my major focus.  So please if you do know anything more than what I think I now, then advice would be highly appreciated......

I take it the reason you are putting on fireline first than mono/flourocarbon is to use the fireline as backing. I would advise you rather reverse it and use the mono as backing, the fireline as your line and the flourocarbon as your leader.

I am not familiar with your reel but anything reputable with 3+ ball bearings and in a 2000/3000 size is perfect

Thanks for the info, line strength? ito the mono, fire-line and the fluro leader? What would you recommend? Here's some info on the reel I intend to use, please have a look and advise, mine is the HPL 30?

I can't find specs nor a pic of the 8" Sensation passion stick dropshot series rod anywhere on the web, only managed the 7" and it doesn't look lik the one i bought, anyhows, suppose it's not all that important, as long as the info on Sealine concur with the facts already mentioned ito of it's qualities (see prior post/s) would you agree with this rod for rock and surf dropshotting Saltwater style? (as Bass dropshotting is something completely different)

Dropshotter, Why on earth would you reverse the Nylon and Fireline? Why use Nylon at all? Just takes up unnecessary space on the reel! Use Fireline only, joined to Fluoro leader.... and yes Camo worm is deadly.

As to reels, LGF, go for the Daiwa Exceler - it's the one the ESA guys use... I got one myself... amazing reel. Do a search for it on Sealine, there's quite a bit of info on it.

Lookyc, listenhere,,,,,,,,  I'm not a frequent visitor to the big blue dam that surrounds our country......

Ok Serious Now, like I said, I don't get to fish in the Sea all that often if ever perhaps once a year, so for me to go and buy special gear just for that (perhaps I should, but can't force myself yet) when i can buy gear that I use more often i.e. for LGFs' just don't make all that sense, well not yet at least, so my question is will the combination of rod and reel do the job or not, if not then I'll go and buy the reel you suggested?

Also, just bought from an online shop two packets of sandworms, the blood and camo colours, now, what remains is what other possible lures I must buy (taking into account that I only fish in the sea perhaps once a year, so i't gotta be something that works).  Rigs, I saw that i should get 1/8oz leadheads with a #6 hook, this correct? and line strength? fire-line and the leader (fluro), what do you suggest?

Any reasonably good small C/g will do the job....! After all, ocean dropshot is just glorified bass fishing isn't it?

Thanx, read the entire thread, and it's true it's got alot of info, just one thing, the testline strength of the fluro when using 14lb fireline is ommitted in the posts, could you advise on this?

Also, had a look at the inwater dvd, and will procure that this afternoon.

Generally for leaders, I go roughly double the mainline strength. So with 14lb fireline I would use 25-30lb Fluoro. The one I use is Varivas, have found it to be very good. You only need about 4m of Fluoro on a dropshot trace, so an expensive spool would last quite a long time...

Thanx, man, you should be receiving sum manna after this, anyhow my mana-meter is busted and it doesn't seem like I'll ever get enough anyhow to exchange for e-bucks Sealine styled credits to buy some tackle from the Sealine-online tackle shop that also died some weeks ago.....

Silly:clowme!  Anyhow have you tried those sensational dropshot fishies in a ready to hook option before and if so what's your take on them?

I also see that there are some posts that claim they've caught various species on some bass-lures, now this opens up a brand new demand for a new 9ft trailer to carry the gear (double storey of cause) where else am I going to pack the Bosses clothes and the 12 Captains (all called Morgan) also still needs space......::slo
