New to drop shot

Hi Guys,

I am very new to drop shot, so new that I have no equipment as yet, I would like to start buying equipment, but what would I need ? I have been fly fishing for many years (saltwater) but I need a new challenge. What can I expect when drop shot fishing in the salt, what species are going to be targeted. I would like to do on and off shore fishing, what rod, line and other equipment will I require ?

Thanks

Peter

Hi MickJack,

I am based in JHB, but really enjoy my salt, I try and get down to the coast as often as I can. I have had a look at the website very interesting. I have got into drop shot from watching ESA, really seems like allot less "PT" than fly fishing and also allot more cost effective.

Seeing that you live in DBN can you give me some ideas on what equipment I could purchase for drop shot and butterfly fishing ?

If you in JHB, I'm sure you already got a Bass outfit. A medium action 6-7ft graphite bass rod and small coffee grinder reel is good enough for starters. Just need the right line, jigheads and plastics.

There are some avid dropshotters on this forum who can help with that.

The better tackle shops have good advise too.

Bare in mind, dropshotting emanated from freshwater dam fishing, so you can experiment there, don't need to be at the coast.

If you care to phone an expert - Tel 031-3681326 or 031-5663482. (Basil Manning/Gone Fishing Advisors hotlines)

I see butterfly jigging was featured on the last ESA program!

Except they called it vertical jigging........but they had some success with it though!
