Hi, I have a Poseidon 5 & a Grandwave 40(Been using for to past 3-4 years). I'm looking to up Grade. I'm thinking of buying a Saltist 50, But not sure what Rod, I'm wanting to cast 7-10 oz & use it for casting & sliding & targeting Shark & Skate.

I Stuck between the Poseidon HMG heavy, Gremlins "Shark Extreme medium & One of the Assassin HMG ?

I would advise the poseidon hmg as you have been using the p5, with no complaints i take it, so no need to change brands.besides, the hmg's from poseidon are fantastic. I would advise against Assasin purely due to the exhorbitant prices at the moment.a few freinds of mine are big tackle dealers and they dont want to stock assasin this year due to the high pricing, and besides, you dont want a rod that makes you grind your teeth with every new scratch due to the amount of money that you paid for it! Also, regarding the reel, the saltist is v good, but note that the price of daiwa, particularly saltiga& saltist has gone way up. I bought a saltiga50 4 3500 a while ago, today dealers tell me their cost is 4000. Have a look at the shimano torium, its a few hundred rands cheaper than the saltist, and its value 4 money,an excellent reel.but if you set on saltist, dnt let me stop you.

Maestro if you complaining about tghe assasin's you obviously have not seen the new pricing on the poseidon's. When I bought my blade in december it was cheaper than the poseidon heavy.

I'm not complaining, just telling you what dealers have told me about assasin pricing in 2009...i was in the market for an assasin and a dealer(friend of mine) advised me against it.The assasin blade isnt the top of the range,so you cant compare it to the new poseidon hmg's in terms of pricing. Look, i'm not saying that the assasin isnt a good rod, but the guy had a p5 & wants to upgrade so why change brands. What are the specs on ur blade & how much did you pay(plz be honest) ?

I also have the poseidon 5 and it was a toss up between the poseidon hmg and the blade hmg, the price on the pos went from R1900 to R3200 in the space of 1 week when i was shopping around. I've got the blade hmg with the usual suspects, trigger whinch, flip guide and now shrink grip. And i paid R2500.00 for the blade.

I would also consider perhaps looking at the saltist 40 ? ...
Just my 2 c worth ... either that or the torium , both great reels , and I am shocked at how much the prices have climbed and are going TO climb . .

I almost accused my local dealer of robbery .
He's normally expensive - and then the prices started rising like water in a bath tub ...

Saltist is a better reel than the torium, but the torium is more value for money, being cheaper..Yeah, they'r milking us dry...have to go back to primitive fishing methods

I will definitely recommend the Poseidon HMG. If you have any doubt, please go and see Kingfisher. They will show you the difference in blanks on a small scale. It's worth it.

the gremlins and posiedon range of hmg heavies are fantastic, the only diff is the posiedon loads easier in the cast, if you a big strong guy go for gremlins, if not well the posiedon is the first choice

You can get a custom 7+1 for 3000...no need to buy the Poseidon range. I have had a look at them and for the money they asking I would NEVER buy one. A nice custom rod built to my specs is the way I would go...........And by the way, there is no chance in hella Saltist is better than a Torium. They are very equal...but if you wade then don't touch the Saltist!

Agreed on the rod, custom is the way to go, if going for Sharks, then the Gremlin\s Pentagon Shark Xtreme Medium is the way forward, not even a question!

I disagree on the Saltist though. I have all three in the range and have used them extensively, wading, the works and have not had a day's worth of hassel with any of them! It's all about how you look after the reel. If you open the reel up and clean it after wading etc, it will last forever.
At very least you don't have to upgrade thew drag washers on the new Saltists and the side plates aren't plastic!!

Didn't realise the old side plates on the Saltist were plastic. We work our reels hard here in Cape Town, 90%of the anglers are wading, and we fish every week with some of the lucky guys fishing plenty times per week. The reel of choice here is the Torium for the simple reason that the Saltist cannot take the pounding and we do not open our reels every time we come home from a fishing trip. A quick service at Keith Murison after 3 or 4 outings and the reel is good as new. I love Daiwas, great bling factor, I think they make great reels and if I didn't need to wade or let my reels get wet then I would get one but Shimano makes the best reels for our conditions, it's been proven over many years in the cape.....

My one Torium (i hang my head in shame as i type this) has only been serviced once in 3 years, all i do is wash her off in fresh water when i get home and back the drag off. Give her a bit of oil once in a while, but i do intend to send the reel in for a service when i collect my rod from Sean this week. (maybe) And anyone that has fished with me knows that i get wet when casting.

No boet, the Torium's side plates are plastic! The Saltist's are aluminium, hence the price difference.
