NEW RESIDENTS AT St FRANCIS

Early in the trip Feri and I made acquaintance with a a young 120kg GW which was a first for me on the point but i had heard of others taxing fish etc.

So at a stage we were harrassed by a few young GW's which destroyed baits, popped leaders and all other things.

On our last day after I caught the big Raggie, I was having a chat with Cafin when we both looked out over the Horizon and a huge White leapt clean out of the water and at 200m I could see every detail of the fish, probably 4m of pure muscle and a big female at that.

She cruises the reefs and shows her dorsal on a number of occasions and is soon joined by 2 x 2-2.5m GW and it's consternation and admiration.

Oh if I had a picture to share with you all of the leaping free shark. It's still as clear and as vivid in my mind as what I saw on the day.

Today I received some email pics of a bus White at the point, circling a fishing boat.

I am just wondering if it has anything to do with the expanding sea lion colony on the point. Normally only a few males but now pups and females and 30+ at a time that we counted

I had a raggie taxed at the hole one morning, the small one kept it occupied and the rag kept going for the head of the white and the big one hit it just in front of the tail and bit the tail off in a single bit (100kg class rag)

Dragged it off into the deep and kindly returned my slide with 5cm of steel and my sinker

I saw an adult one make a full breach aerial off the end of the pier.((brigh(()ton Breath taking sight!

When these things happen you are normally alone or know one is looking at the time.

I've seen a big fin on more than one occasion at the point but nothing consistent.... Seen several breaching whites jbay side too, but the junior class chasing seagulls or attempting to dislodge traces of unlucky anglers whose rigs they've rolled off

A couple of years ago we had 6 seperate sharks breaching all around our boat for about half an hour... They would keep their positions and jump in the same place over and over again. There were whales and baitfish around... Still dont know what the heck they were thinking or doing but it certainly seemed to be co-ordinated... Not big ones say sub 200kg

The one we saw jumping was a 600kg+ fish and it jumped more than 2m into the air with a full belly display (side on), the rest of the group looked to late only to see the huge splash followed by the circling Dorsals (3)

Needless to say the next 2 pickups we had in short succession ended very quickly

Must have been awesome to see. Just for the sake of asking. Do you think a fish that size (600kg) would ever be landed on any sort of tackle, or are they just way to powerfull.

Biggest landed on a Tiagra 80SW is that 695kg beast at Mazeppa

Could be done but not at the point, he'd just swim around the point and cut you off,

I think it would be to much PT to try but it would be standup harness short boat road and kite to do it and MCM would be on you before you even got the pickup, because it would be clear what you were up to, like building a hide and carrying a 300 Nitro in the Kruger where the Rhino's go to drink.....

let's not divert from the topic.

Fact is they're there in numbers and standard tackle doesn't stand a chance. We were bitten off rolled off and jumped off and had 3 on. One we only id'd at the side and the Conservation guys who were there asked us to unhook it on the ledge (in the water) and released it but no pics.

That big one will simply destroy standard tackle if you are unlucky enought to attract her to your bait

Yip.... interesting stuff to me.... people are learning more and more of these fish...

The smaller ones, could you see if they were males?

It almost sounds like pack behaviour the way you described the raggie taxing....

That's just insane. Guess you need to know your stuff then. Pitty about them taxing your bag, but then it's nature.

@Craig do you maybe think these GW's have been around the hole time without us knowing about them, and maybe now we just see alot more of them because we actually keep our eyes open to spot them?

They used to be in and out but the researchers have Id'd 2 possibly 3 that have taken up permanent residence in J Bay and St Francis and these are the big ones

All 3 the small ones we got to see were females and the really big breaching one was definitely a female
