You guys must check out the instructional video's, very informative on butterfly jigging and also the new jigging style (lucanus). Presented by my favirotie fishing dude "presenter" JOSE WEBE.

The local fishing programms could learn alot by watching these professional video's.

The Lucanus Jigging system has been around for about 2 years and is deadly effective, especially on bottomfish.

Much like "Butterfly Jigging", the Lucanus Jigging system is a Shimano marketing angle on an already tried and proven method which was developed and perfected in the East.

Vertical Jigging had been around for years, then Shimano got hold of it and created "Butterfly Jigging" and introduced it to the West as "New" and the rest is history,.... clever buggers those Shimano chaps, they definetly know their markets!!!

The Lucanus System is based on what is known as "Slow" or "Medai" jigs, and has also been around for a while.... Deadly effective for reef dwelling species and bottomfish especially, and is awesomely simple to use.

The only drawback on the Lucanus and alot of other slow/medai jigs is the hok size and strength that come standard on them... very easily replaced and upgraded, but I'd like to see them come with better and bigger hooks.

Here in the Cape this style should be dynamite on Roman and for Kob and Geelbek.

We do large versions all the way up to 600 grams of these for targetting deeper water large predators... in Fedu's report on Kob in Angola, he takes a couple Kob on them in 90 odd meters, and I'm hoping to target Coppers with them in June/July with Tkei...... Of course ours are carrying 11/0 Owner Jobu Hooks or SJ41's and 400lb Kevlar Assist!!!

Have a look at the " Minimum Depth for Jigging" Thread, Jimi the Fish posted some of his home made Medai jigs which he made himself and that have done plenty of damage to all sorts of fish!These things defeintely work!

Howzit Nepps,

yeh the butterfly system i knew has been around a while.

The lucanus system i only saw yesterday.

I do understand why you have an issue with the small hooks.Try watch the video on the lucanus system and they give their explenation for the small hooks etc.

The size of fish they pull in that video with dem small hooks are amazing.

First cast with a Lucanus and I was on. Also got stuck a couple of times but the jig came out easily - another bonus of small hooks.

Hi sven,

I'm using the Lucanus for almost a year now and I've got mixed feelings about it.

It works nice with some "smaller" bottom dwellers, it also works with bigger guys but then you've got to see the small hooks problem, lot's of the time you loose the fish because the hooks get straigthen up :-(

Wright or Wrong what I do is:

If the bite is hot or it's a big guys spot I use the usual jigs or in some cases a bigger "lucanus style" jig, the inchiku

Slow bite or small fish, lucanus.

These way in a good day (hot bite, good spot) I get mostly big guys and avoid the small catches that are only going do make me waist my time :)

P.S. - JOSE is also my favorite dude presenter but remmember he is a Shimano guy so usually he tries to "sell" Shimano gear.

LOL i am also a shimano guy so thats sweet hehe. Seriously his shows are brilliant as u know. So i would be more inclinded to buy Shimano than the sponsors products  of that other local show. Especially that the sound is better and you can hear what he is talking about  (hier kom kak) LOL

i get what you  saying and tx  for the input.

I'm a Shimano fan myself :) , 90% of my reels are shimano (Stella is the best spinner reel ever made) most of my rods also, but ...

Look at all the options first:

Then look at the price and results, even Shimano is making inchikus now, they call it Shimano Engetsu Inchiku the video can be found here:

I think it's also called bottom ship (in USA I think), not knowing a word of Japanese in the video it seems to me the guys are saying forget all the money you spent in lucanus and buy the inchikus from Shimano because they work much better :spite

Look also at the depths that you will be fishing, if it's too deep the only option are Nepps ones :dude:, all the other ones are too light.

If you allready bought the lucanus, go ahead and have fun, it's a really funny system, you don't set the hook, you wait for the fish to hook itself.


P.S. - Allthought JOSE only caught one Marlin in is whole live, I love the way he explains things, another good one is offshore adventures...

Thumper Squid is also available locally from another Vertical Jig importer, I actually have their stuff, from Fishing Fanatics

I also believe it will be DEADLY, and will test it soon, just a pitty the PE shops don't have an eye for quality and something "new" and different.

Another option is jigging the HEAVY bucktail jigs, they have always been effective

LOL ye that is one fish he's been spooked with, acyually saw the show where he caught his first Marlin, stand to be corrected but i think he lost 1 or 2 before landing his 1st on that day.

I remember him to do more saltwater flyfishing than than with conventional rods, so maybe that explains the marlin thing hehe.

I have seen their stuff, and the quality is very good. As with all, if you a serious angler just remove the hooks and replace with proper jigging hooks

they do the 100gram octopus jig and the 200g squid jig

both should be deadly in this application
