Ive had an iphone for over 2 years and have never had that problem. Iphone thats jailbroken is the best you get an app called sbsettings which you launch it by swiping your finger on the status bar and can turn on/off your 3G, edge, wifi connection.
You shouldn't have to Jail Break something, to make it work!
With Android, Rooting to a new ROM is just something fun you CAN do, if you are brave, sweat nails, and don't afraid of any "Warranty Void" stickers, lol!!

Agree that the auto update feature is dangerous if you are responsible for the bill,my colleague was in Nigeria for a month last year, data bill on his ipad was R30k lol
